Since the Expedition is built on the F150 platform, what allows the F150 to have a considerably higher payload and towing capacity? Is it the solid rear axle and leaf springs? This link - https://www.briarwoodford.com/research-f150-engines.html - has towing and payload tables on the left side of the page for the F150 and includes the capacities with the 3.5L Ecoboost. I'm just curious - I love my 23 and wouldn't trade it!

The expy has an independent rear suspension which isn't as good with load bearing as a sol8d axle. Same goes for the springs. Coils aren't as good as leaf plates in both load bearing or weight support/transfer. Its also easier to adjust and modify, which helps for the heady duty tow pkgs. The expy also carries more weight due to a closed rear wagon body type with a ehoke seat and mechanisms for it, which will lower its payload capes as well.

Keep in mind those are the maximum possible payload and towing numbers you could get for each of those engine choices. Those typically come on the lower trim levels (think XL) which has less equipment/options installed. In the real world what they offer is usually lower than those for payload. My 1795 lb Expy payload is higher than a lot of F-150s. Every pound of stuff you add to the vehicle takes a pound away from its payload. Payload is likely where you will hit limits before towing max if there is more than just a single person in the vehicle (150-200 lbs per person eats it up quick!). Ford also does offer a heavy duty payload leaf spring package on some trims which helps get to those numbers.

One additional thing the F-150 offers that helps with towing is longer wheelbases, even more than the Expy Max. This helps with towing stability.

Hope this helps.

Optional F150 HD Payload option that AJ mentioned can boost max tow to over 13,000 pounds in some models according to my quick glance at the Ford Towing guide. Expedition doesn't have that option. HD tow in the Expedition is pretty much larger engine and transmission radiators, no suspension parts.

But aren't they different generations of the same platform? The 2021 F-150 was revised for significantly more payload to accommodate the batteries for the hybrid. The 2024 Expedition is still based on the 2015 Ford F-150 platform as are all gen 4 Expeditions.

The Expedition has seating capacity for eight, which the F150 does not have. It's also generally used as a more consumer oriented vehicle. In contrast, the F150 frequently does double duty as a consumer and commercial/fleet vehicle. There's a cost to increasing payload because you have to upgrade the hardware and the vehicle will have a stiffer ride.

They’d have to do a coil spring , shock , sway bar, half shaft, diff upgrade for more capacity. You can do sumo springs, bilsteins, sway bar, which won’t add capacity but make towing nicer. I added sumo springs, bilsteins. I tow 8885lb and it does just fine.
