Overhangs between min and MAX Gen IV+ are identical, the 10.9" length difference is all between the wheels, so entrance and departure angles are identical. Obviously, there is an increased risk of high centering with the longer wheelbase; but, as a primarily Southeastern and Midwestern hunter, rock climbing isn't on my dance card, so...."I am not sure an Expedition MAX Tremor would be a good idea because it would be too much of a butt dragger? As far as utility goes no argument there. Why not just modify a Max with a small lift and add skid plates?
Why not mod one? Because I used to have input on those decisions at Ford, I know the numbers and the (frequently flawed) mindset of the planners that make these decisions. All things considered, the company would make more money by offering long and short versions....Likely, they are being pressured to increase the mix of short ones to accommodate plant mix constraints and rather than break those constraints (possibly paint capacity - if so you can thank the EPA morons for that); so, they came up with an attractive, well received package that doesn't cost much to include and confined it to shorts only in a vain attempt to get the customer base to bias a little bit towards SWB models....
