While driving tonight both screens that display maps went dark. Upper screen said "Map source not supported". I turned off the radio and turned it back on. The volume control knob is not working correctly. No icons or anything on the lower screen. Upper map screen is blank. Cycled the ignition on and off a couple of times. No change. Thanks in advance. CJDave.

Went out to try the two suggestions that popped up on here.. Started the engine and the screens are normal. I don't know. CJDave.

Had it happen to us while driving back home during Christmas break in the middle of Colorado. Lasted all the way through Denver and Colo Springs until we stopped for gas again in Southern Colorado. I had cycled the engine a couple times, nothing happened. Then it randomly came back after filling up. Hasn't happened since.

That sounds like my situation. Thanks for your input Iaazan. We're headed to Florida from Ohio on March 4th. Fingers crossed. CJDave.

Take a wrench with you to disconnect the battery if needed for 30 secs or so. Seems like these trucks need a Ctrl+Alt+Del reset now and then. That or maybe it's a thermal issue? Too long of use and the screen decides it needs a break? We were driving west and had a lot of sun on a warm day shining on the dash. It came back after the sunset. That's the only thing I can think of...

Well, just like we fixed old tube tv with a hard smack.... sometimes computers need a hard whack too! Maybe that last door slam before you went back in the house for a drink and check online was what fixed it??? We'll never know.... Just glad for you that it's working again!

It does sound like a thermal issue versus a connector issue. Who would of thought that a dashboard.... Black dashboard... would get so hot in the sun???

I'll tell you who should have thought about that!

Anyway, there no doubt needs to be a cooling duct or in the least a fan, heat pipe, liquid cooling something to keep the processor in the HMI(s) cool.

I am entertaining myself with thoughts of all of the wacky add-ons that will be made to fix this : )

I don't think the issue is heat related. In 40 degree weather we drove from home to dinner. About a mile. Ate dinner then drove about 2 miles when the problem occurred. Good thoughts though. Thanks. CJDave.

Easy reset is pressing the volume button five times.
so is this like the power and skip forward soft reset on the sync 3? i have to do this at least once a week these days, and about 50% of the time it doesn't come back on, even with multiple soft resets, just have to completely power down the truck and wait for 10+ minutes for the BCM to power down more. then it usually comes back, and yes I realize I'm talking a 2019 with sync3 vs your newer ones.

Any notifications about a software update? Some updates (likes the ones for the module that control the screens) are done while the vehicle is on and running. If an update was installing while you were in it, it could explain the glitch.

Mine is set for updates at 1:00 AM when connected to wifi. I don't know if they use the LTE modem built in that creates a wifi hotspot in the vehicle

An update was installed about a week before the issue popped up. Another a couple of days after. Thanks. CJDave.

All of this information is going into my "Operators notebook" kept in the glove box.

I will be sure to add to this site what I find as well.

Thanks!

Disconnect the car battery and short out the leads that go to the battery and leave the car like that for a few minutes before reinstalling the battery. If that doesn’t help, I think I’d try to update Sync somehow.

The term "short out" when talking about computers causes concern. Thnks. CJDave.

It's not a SYNC system anymore, it's an operating system with Android. The only updates to come through have been "behind the scenes" and they are automatic to the truck.

You short out the PSU capacitors so there is absolutely no voltage after disconnecting the leads from the battery. Nothing to be concerned about. If the board computers can’t handle that you wouldn’t wanna spent that kind of money for a car. Matter effect in the TVS diode protection for each module is 28V before they short out due to over voltage. I fixed ECU’s and other modules before. As long as you don’t reverse polarity the battery leads or put more than 28V on to it you are good.
Shorting out the battery leads after the battery is disconnected is least of my concerns.

Android or Sync, doesn’t matter… just a different OS where one is more integrated into the onboard systems than the other.

My Sync4A updates same way than the Android. Behind the scene via OTA.
