Hey all. My buddy was about to send a 99 Eddie Bauer to the junk yard after the 4R100 gave way and was told by his shop replacement was gonna cost him $3500. His family had it since new and took pretty good care of it. He called me up knowing I'm a car hoarder..(definition of a hoarder is >50% of vehicles are not running...im trying to recover)

Long story short I watched this guy, Jimmy Williams The Bob Ross of slush boxes, the Fred Rogers of automatics

And I asked myself: How hard could it be? Famous last words......

So far so good. Maybe my posts of this build will be of some use to a few of you at some point.

As of tonight I've done a complete tear down and inspection. I've just cleaned and painted the case.

Mr. Willimas is one heck of an instructor and I cant say enough good things about his YouTube videos. I might just pull this off.

It will either be a positive example, or a cautionary tale. Wish me luck!

So you were able to tear down and rebuild the 4r100 in your garage with "normal" tools ?

So how is everything working now ?

I would love to hear how it went. I have rebuilt a few manual transmissions but never an automatic.. did it work when you finished? or are you still working on it? Best of luck.

If you take your time and watch that guy's videos multiple times....YOU CAN DO THIS! I did this all solo by the way. With the right jack, a custom adapter plate for the pan, and some DIY jack risers...This 300+ LBS tranny went in with next to no drama! The transfer case was an awkward nightmare to wrangle into place, but I didn't want to deal with the extra bulk and weight of it attached to the tranny while I was trying to slip torque converter in.

Yes, you can make most of your own tools for special stuff. You do need a small press, but those can be bought on amazon for 70 bucks. he shows you everything you need in the first or second video. I had a tranny pump puller from a friend, but you dont need it!

That's exactly what I needed to know. I'm very mechanical, but didn't know how bad a "fairly modern" automatic would be. The last one I rebuilt went behind a 351 C in a 72 Torino, lol. Did you do any upgrades to it while you had it apart ? I tow a fair amount, and would like to beef it up a little if possible. I've been thinking about buying a junkyard trans and rebuilding it for when mine finally lets loose.

I just bought a Monster Stage 2 Transmission. That is upgraded from the standard one, which responds quite well.
