Very intermittent, so I hesitate to end up having to leave it at the dealer for weeks.
Almost always when shifting 3 >4, when the trans is cold, get like a false neutral/RPM flare. Let off & let it settle/shift & it moves along fine. Almost never happens once it's warmed up.
I've found it seems to be less frequent if I put the drive mode into Tow or Sport, but that could be a false positive.

My wife's rig, so she doesn't always remember to let me know when it happens, but does seem to be more frequent.
She got some kind of red 'system fail' alert last week, but it cleared & was gone before she got a good look at it. Not sure if related.

Is this likely to be a trans replacement? Will fluid flush/drain & fill be beneficial? Only 68k on it, so rather not go through the game of looking for a replacement over this. Wife loves the truck, and doesn't want to replace it either.

My 2019 did something similar. There is a recall that addresses this. I just had it done.
However, before having it updated, I deleted all TCM learning info and then disabled TCM learning. This leaves the vehicle with the factory settings and does not calibrate settings based on driving habits. I notice immediate better shifting, a little tighter and more aggressive than after it learned my slow local driving habits. I may turn it back on to see if the erratic shifting behavior goes away. Mine was when I rapidly accelerated from 45 to 50mph the tranny did a neutral rev and when I took my foot off the gas, it slammed into gear. It only did it a couple of times but it would eventually hurt the transmission.

Thanks, your later description sounds similar, but seems more common on gentle driving on ours.
How do you clear TCM? And do you have the recall info on that?

I use Forscan for modifications.
Check your FordPass app for any recalls and TSBs for your vehicle.

Any idea on the recall or TSB info for the trans? I'd rather make the call with all the info in hand.

Lots of similar experiences, but no explanation.
On ours, when trying to shift to 4th, I've seen it drop to 2nd then try to jump back to 4th, while RPM increases like a false neutral. That's not the 'norm' when this occurs, but has happened that was a couple times.

My 2019 46k just started with same issue. Only cold. Has issues when first trying to upshift from 3rd to finding 5th. Once that cycle clears Trans shifts fine. Going into ford in a week. Campaign and t- Stat. I will wait to see what they come up with.

Check to see if yours is part of the service bulletin, as it is free to have it done. One other thing I noticed after the software update is, my tranny highway was always close to my engine temp which is 205-212. Now my tranny temp, highway or city, right now in 90-degree weather is 185-189 degrees. I do have the Platinum model with the tow package, but the temp change came after the update.

There are no recalls for the transmission. The issue with the weird shifts is a common manufacturing fail that Ford KNOWS about but declines to make it a recall and only a TSB. The only fix is a new CDF drum replacement, tranny rebuild. Which would be covered only if you are still under warranty or extended service plan and the dealer service dept scam artists can replicate while they take their quarter mile test drive...The dealer will do everything in there power to say they cant replicate the issue attempting to delay your concern until after you are out of warranty. Once u are out of warranty, they will then say with no hesitation "ah yes, we know about this issue and we can fix it for one million dollars"

I probably will expect some feedback. I have a Ford Protect warranty, it is good until 2029 with mileage up to 135k. Doubt I will put that amount of mileage on it before 2029. My plan is if feedback arises is to drive the vehicle with the Service Manager first thing in the AM when the vehicle is in for service and Cold. Perhaps this will eliminate any doubt of issues this Trans is having. Will see.....

The transmission technical service bulletin that refers to a tcm software update, stops the erratic shifting, occasional slippage and higher transmission temperatures. They updated that software when I took my vehicle in for the technical service bulletin that refers to the bad catalytic converter false error code. Both were free.
So far, I'm pleased with the results as my transmission shifts better, seems to have better clutch and plate pressure settings, making the shifting more responsive. I used to step on the gas to pass someone and there was a lag and sometimes slippage, then knock into gear. Now it is very responsive.
Time will tell.

I dont see any Free TSB for this concern. Your going to have me walking into my dealer service dept asking about a cost free tsb that fixes 10R80 shift issues and get laughed at :)

Generally a TSB program is a item that is a non charge item due to owner satisfaction with trans issues or matters of discovery issues with other items.

tsb is a common vehicle issue that the manufacturer has found a fix for that the technician can look up and follow. The customer still has to pay

According to my invoice they performed an emission recall, which consisted of updating the pcm software that was causing the premature catalytic converter code and warning light, and heat. I actually had this happen to me, cleared it and it never came back. They also performed a transmission recall, which consisted of updating the tcm software that was causing erratic shifting, slow shift response, resulting in slamming into gear and heat. It is supposed to fix those issues by adjusting various settings. I also had the weird shifting where it felt like it was lost or slipping, then slammed into gear 2 times. My tranny temp was also always between 200 and 212 on the highway. Now it's 185-189. I looked in my app to see further information, but they already erased them and the service info shows $0 scheduled maintenance - other.

Maybe your dealer charges for TSBs, but I didn't pay for either one of the Technical Service Bulletins, for my 2019 Expedition Platinum. I received the bulletins in my Ford Pass plus got letters. I made the appointment, dropped off my Ex the next day in the morning, and they delivered it back to me at 3pm. Both were software updates for certain 2018 to 2021 or 2022 Ford vehicles, Expedition being one of them.

I did get another bulletin for the transmission repair that my extended warranty will pay, minus my $100 deductible. I also got a second seatbelt tensioner recall to check date codes of the parts used to fix my front driver and passenger side. It appears some of the early repairs used old parts that would not fix the issue.

Can you provide the transmission recall/tsb # ?
