Going after another 06 4x4 tomorrow. It has a bad engine, spun bearing on a replacement engine. I have my perfect 06 Navigator engine from my wrecked Navigator that we bought in 07. Probably will build and keep this as a driver and tow rig for my trailers while I upgrade my 84 GMC DIESEL crew cab. I have been looking for home for my engine.

It turned out to be an 04, it was nice enough that I now have a 2 valve, a couple 3 valves and a 4 valve. Plus a 3 and 4 valve spare engines. Two Expeditions and two Navigators. Plus piles of parts.

My preference is the 2V. I just don't care for variable valve timing. Clearly you have plenty of 3V and 4V spare parts though.

My 2006 Limited was awesome. It had 415,000 miles on it when the neighbor cut a tree down on it. 5.4 3v gets a bad rap but mine was great. I do probably over maintain a little……

Got the 04 into the shop and up on the hoist. It has a reman engine some time ago. It has a bad engine bearing, the guy I bought it from had dropped the pan to investigate. He replaced the bearing, that never works after it spins. It does run and is quiet enough to drive it for an evaluation. I want to make sure the transmission and diffs work fine. The four wheel drive switch does not engage the transfer case. West coast rig so no rust, the only paint damage is the aluminum gate.

I have a 4 cam with a broken intake chain that ran on four cylinders when purchased. I will investigate the bottom end and see if it is good. The four cam engines have flat top pistons so I may have to purchase a set of dished pistons for the 2 valve engine.

Check charging system light came on during test drive. Tire pressure sensor failure, not unexpected. Check air ride also on after installing the 4x4/air ride fuse. I was told the 4x4 module is bad before purchase. Found that the transmission shudders in reverse hot, it seemed good cold. I will pull the transmission before I pull the engine, that makes the engine install so much easier. I will rebuild the transmission while it is out. Tomorrow I am going to dig through some boxes and find a good 4x4 module. I swapped the alternator with one from an 03 Navigator I stripped for parts and it charges as it should now. It was at 13.75 and it is now at 14.12 at idle with the hvac and lights on.

I plan on driving it during retirement so I can work on the Diesel crew cab I built 20+ years ago. I retired last year and have been busy every day since. The 06 Navigator is very close to perfect and so is the 03 Navigator with the fresh 4 cam 5.4. I actually pushed the throttle down after 1000 mile break in and it runs as hard as my 06 3 valve did for 17 years. Change your oil and warm them up all the way every time. They will last for years with proper use and maintenance.

Progress on the 04 EB, I am fixing all the little stuff. I tested the 4x4 module by swapping a known good one from my 03 Navigator. The module works fine in the Navigator and the Navigator module acts just like the Expedition module in the Expedition. Reinstall both modules in their original rigs. I replaced the transfer case motor assembly and the Expedition now has working four wheel drive. The 4wheel high light only works on the initial bulb test but the 4wheel low light functions as it should. Good enough for now. I replaced the defective multifunction switch with one from inventory and also repaired the broken wires for the overdrive cancel function. Little tiny wires broken about a half inch from the harness connector. We replaced shift levers for broken wires and worn shifters all the time on the 90-03 Ford trucks.

Replaced the passenger mirror assembly that was broken and held together with tape and a zip tie. The puddle light came on when I connected the mirror. There is hope for the interior lights, none were working when purchased. I dropped the overhead console to repair the lights and found the sunroof wires disconnected. I hadn’t looked the the sunroof and that means that it doesn’t work properly. I looked at the outside and someone had urethaned it shut. I cut the urethane and plugged it in. The mechanism is screwed, it only moves on one side. I have another complete sunroof assembly from my 06 Navigator. So the headliner is out and the Navigator sunroof is in. The rear drains were clean and both front drains were plugged solid. I now know where exactly those drains end and how to clean them. I used compressed air, my shop vac and a long speedometer cable insert.

Goodness you got a lot of things done. Sounds like that thing needs a lot of little issues resolved.

Those dang sunroof drains, air, water and sometimes lawn trimmer line is what I use to keep them cleaned out. They caused my driver side A and C pillar bottoms to rust out since the drains both ended on some foam.

Got the Expedition apart today and on the stand to repair the engine. It has lost several rod bearings. Only #2 and #6 were the only rods not black from heat. I also found the knock sensor wires cut at the connector, probably happened during this replacement engine installation 15k miles ago. I wonder if it pinged itself to death. Here is a picture of the engine removal adaptor that works very well.
