I have a 2020 Expedition Max where when I try to open the rear liftgate (from remote, rear button, or front inside button), it only shifts a 1/2 CM up and then beeps & doesn't open. How do I get it to open, what is the driver behind my not being able to open the back liftgate? For a short while if I kept pushing the button (any of them) multiple times, then it would open up...but for past few weeks it won't open at all anymore. Any theories or tricks to try?

It lifts straight up (not out) and beeps as if it is blocked when I try to open...and doesn't ever lift open.

Thanks for any recommendations!

As long as the lift gate lock releases, just pull the gate all the way up using your hands. Once it is all the way up press and hold the trunk open close button on the trunk lift gate until it beeps (setting the opening height). Maybe that helps...

The door won't release, I think that is the problem. Ironically, it will release ever once in a while...but rare (and not on same day).

I literally came here to say the exact same thing. There is no rhyme or reason. Today the tail lights will flash, but I get absolutely no response from the liftgate with the button button by the steering wheel or remote. Sometimes it does what you are describing by lifting straight up a half of a cm and then go straight back down. If I just give it a little while, sometimes 10 minutes sometimes 12 hours it will work again. Glass liftgate works completely fine. This is so freaking frustrating.

You need to use a scan tool that can communicate with the power liftgate module. I had a similar problem, and the power liftgate module had alarms. I have an OTOFIX D1 Lite and when doing a system scan, it showed the alarms in the power liftgate. It could be the gas supports are weak and the lift motor was overloaded. The module will shut down the motor to prevent burning up. It can also be the latch is not showing it has been released. A good scan tool will tell the story.
If you can press the handle button and pull it up to open, the latch is working but not showing released or the motor circuit is shutting down. If it will not pull open, the latch is probably not fully releasing.

Revisiting this. I replaced my button on the liftgate bc it was sticking and while I could operate it fine the wife could never get it right. I was hoping it would make help the liftgate working when it wants to and sometimes acts like it is a solid brick. I have no words and it is infuriating. One of these days I’m gonna have a full truck of crap and it won’t open.

Has anybody solved this!? I’m going to try and find a scan tool like Stephen mentioned above.

I replaced the Liftgate Lock Actuator Motor Rear Door Trunk Latch...and has been good to go since. Before I had a few times where i had full loads and couldn't get out. Just replace the latch...pretty easy process.
