Compass isn't working

My 2003 Espidetion has the compass and temp displayed beside the odometer. There is also a little box mounted up behind the rear view mirror. The problem is all of the display segments are lit up...it doesn't change at all...the temp part works fine...there appears to be a reset button on the box behind the mirror,it doesn't do anything when i press it....so...given these symptoms....what is wrong and what do I need to do to fix it?

If that doesn’t work, sometimes resistors on the circuit board come loose and need to be re-soldered. A few folks sell the service on eBay for around $20-45. My electric tech at my work was able to do the one in my 04 F-250 in a few minutes.
