Compass not working

My 2003 Espidetion has the compass and temp displayed beside the odometer. There is also a little box mounted up behind the rear view mirror. The problem is all of the display segments are lit up...it doesn't change at all...the temp part works fine...there appears to be a reset button on the box behind the mirror,it doesn't do anything when i press it....so...given these symptoms....what is wrong and what do I need to do to fix it?

It might need calibrated, there's a section in the manual on how to do it, it involves driving in a circle and telling it which magnetic reigon you're in.

Nothing happens when I push the calibration button....it just sits there with every segment illuminated....I even tried replacing the unit on the mirror....I tested, and there is voltage there....I wonder if it is the display in the dash that is messed up...but the temp display nest to it works fine.I don't know what else to try......
