Are these coolant hose failures due to the plastic Y pipe failing? Or, due to the aluminum crimp sleeves that are used to clamp the rubber hose to the Y pipe splitting and releasing its clamp?

Based on my research, the answer to your question is "Yes." Failures have occurred in both places. I was apparently lucky (unlucky) enough to be one of the ones to have the failure back by the rear heater core.

When I had to replace mine the crimps were starting go at the firewall fittings, but ultimately my leak was the plastic fitting by the radiator hose.

Can we just replace those crimp sleeves with traditional hose clamps or oetiker clamps?

I've seen guys on YouTube talk about putting worm drive clamps over the aluminum sleeves and cranking them down until the split in the sleeve closes.

I'm paying stupid money to get them replaced, simply because we have two family road trips before the end of the year and I need this truck reliable. But it does beg the question of what preventative maintenance can we do so I'm not paying this again in another 50K miles. That's of course if I still have it in 50K miles, seems like it's always something. When it's running it's great, but when it's not...

I'm rather surprised I can't seem to find aftermarket hoses out there on the market. Seems like there'd be some money to be made since the Ford ones are junk. At least Doorman has metal Y pipes to replace the crappy Ford plastic ones, but not sure how good those even are.

I got quoted today $1000 to change both hoses. Does that seem right? That seems high to me. The hoses are only $300.

Go back and reread this comment in this very thread.

Watch a few videos of guys replacing the heater hose Y sections on Expeditions and you may have a better understanding of why the labor charge to do so is so high.

Looks like 5.10 labor hours for the replacement if it's the same as mine was. Multiply that times your shops labor cost.

How did you get them to drop the price?
My memory is terrible but I know I complained of the cost, I believe the dealer setup a correspondence number and then I called Ford customer service to complain about the cost. Ford corporate authorized the cost reduction.
