I’d be more inclined to just haggle for a better deal on a brand new one. You get all the updates that way, can be more sure of not getting screwed by buying sight unseen. Can be safe taking delivery of it from across the country. That’s what I did four years ago.

Updates include cdf drum, thermostat, cam phasers and maybe more I’m not thinking of. Plus you can add the extended warranty from flood ford or others pretty cheap after the fact. Cars aren’t selling real well this year, should be a deal out there waiting on you.

You absolutely want hd tow equipment on whatever you buy.

What I thought when I made my purchase was exactly same as what you said here.

Stay away from 4th Gen. Ford Expeditions until they fix the transmission issues. I’m sitting looking at a $9K transmission replacement on a 21 I purchased new. Will never buy another Ford.
Well, I have the same and it has been pretty much flawless. I would probably buy another.

The wife and i are looking at getting an expedition max, and I have a few questions.
I am looking for one with the HD tow package, and an 8 seater. Will probably do the rough country lift too, unless there's a better lift to go with that is in the same pricing ballpark.
The Ford gold certified warranty, does it cover the cam phasers issue, and the transmission issue? Is it worth specifically buying a vehicle that has this warranty, or not?
In between year models 19-22, is there one year that is better than the others? It seems in 22 some interior changes were made, but were there any drive train changes?
In 22 they did away with the automatic running boards, is there a reason for that? I know it's just something to fail, but we want them, so does that mean we would need to go aftermarket for the steps if we get a 22?

Is there a reason a 20 platinum is the same price as a 22 limited with the same amount of miles? What all does the platinum entail that a limited doesn't?

I think that is most of my questions I have, for now.
Thanks for the help in advance.
To get my 24 Max Limited loaded and 8 passenger I had to order it. It came in six weeks.

So was having the same issue 2021 Max Platinum and somehow it has pretty much disappeared. Not sure if with all the other issues I'm having they decided to fix that or not. It was purchased from a Ford dealer as a certified vehicle and after putting 100 miles on it threw an engine code. The cat converters needed to be replaced at 36,400 miles. They informed me that the parts were in stock and they needed it for half a day to replace them. Fortunately they gave me a loaner because they had it for a whole week. Hadn't thought to much of it but haven't noticed the obvious tranny clunk anymore. Issues include dash falling apart 15K to fix and they wont touch it, Cat converters 6k warranty. Now passenger side headlight assy 3k to fix again with all the warranties they sold me none cover it. Been buying Ford since 1977 and thinking back about it just since 2019 have bought 5 all from dealers two certified and others new. The two this year will be the last based on Ford's lack of quality and customer support of not standing behind their product.

My 2019 developed a cat and oxygen problem. I took it to the dealer and they said the cat needed replacement. I googled the codes and watched several videos. One symptom was carbon buildup. Liqui Moly Catalytic System Clean 300 ml 7110 was a recommended solution. I purchased it and poured it in the tank, and it solved the problem. It's been 1500 miles and still going strong. It may be a band aid, but my rough idle and sluggishness at low speeds are gone.
