Hey guys!

So I just got myself an Expedition here in Switzerland. The truck is well kept but there is an issue I want to figure out:

My DRLs are not working. It is a Canada model, and I checked it does have the relay box underneath the Dash and the Resistor behind the front bumper. Auto lamps work fine at night (or if I cover the sensor on the dash), but during daytime they just stay off. Including the amber lights in the front if that matters.

EDIT:
Took out the Resistor and measured it with my multimeter. It’s showing me 55” Ohms which is… high. My high school calculations led me to 0.58? No clue if that’s right, but I went ahead and just ordered a new one. Let’s see if that fixes it.

I’d appreciate any help on this! :)
DRLs are mandatory here and I hate using my regular beams during daytime.

Cheers!
Vincent

My '99 EB 5.4L doesn't have DRLs, and I haven't seen any that do have them. You may just have to turn your parking lights on to serve as DRLs and call it good.

Correct… Canadian models have them. Has 2016 Expedition that had them. Noticed that others did not. Thought it was weird. THEN, came across some info stating Canadian models had them. Was mine from there? Idk But, it certainly did have DRL’s because the extended operation on my aftermarket LED’s from Headlight Revolutions were usually dead after approximately 10-18mos. That could have a lot to do with the bulbs as well… I know.

Wanted to give an update on this:

Followed the shop manual, wire by wire and checked all the relays (or so I thought…). The resistor was definitely dead, that was the first thing I tested and I thought replacing that would fix it, but it didn’t. Was hard to track down one of those old resistors, but it needed to be replaced anyways.

Everything was getting power as it should. But then my father-in-law helped me check over the relays again, every pin this time. Before I was just looking for that click.

Well, turns out one relay did click, but was just stuck in one position. I actually believe the previous owner switched out the relay with the auxiliary heater relay right next to it, because he thought there were no DRLs anyway or was too lazy to fix it (get a new resistor). I’m saying this because he told me he had to get a new relay for the auxiliary heater lmao.

I was lucky and had a Ford dealership near me with that relay in stock (rare in Europe for Ford lol, especially for american imports not sold here).

So everything works as it should now!

The only thing that’s bugging me, is that the DRLs are now always on with the vehicle in the ON position haha. Been thinking about re-wiring it so they only activate if the autolamp is enabled. Or just add a switch. Or pull fuse #9 in the BJB. But I’m happy they work now!

Feel free to hit me up with any questions about the Canadian DRLs on the first gens.
