Why is my 2007 ford expedition Eddie Bauer 4WD making a hum/low grind at 20-45 mph extremely randomly, it’s been over 9,000+ miles and it’s the same pitch, same noise level, same sound, I’ve been diagnosing for too long, my last straw was today I bought a vacuum tester for the IWE and both hold vacuum I am extremely beat

Does the hum / low grind occur with the vehicle being driven with the wheels straight, or turned?

My 2014 used to make what sounded like a bearing noise in the front end at around 30 mph. That was an issue since day one from the dealer new. I brought it to the dealer and they could not pinpoint it. It never got worse, but was always there at 30 mph, and at point I always tried to go a little faster or slower if it bothered me.

My 2014 is gone now, but I never had an actual issue with the differential, everything worked past the day I traded it in.

The front differential does not turn if the hubs release and the transfer case is in 2wd. Maybe your IWE solenoid has failed and the differential is always spinning. You will still want to repair the front differential if it is bad but there has to be a cause for the failure. In the 240k miles on my first Navigator the front diff didn’t have 5000 miles on it.

AWAR,

I have to look again, but I thought the front axles always turned but don't lock to the wheels until the vacuum hub actuators are energized (Vacuum applied).

My 2014 made that similar noise at right about 30mph. I was looking for the paperwork from the dealer where I asked them to check it out, but that must have went with my old Exp in the glove box.

As always, thanks for your response.
