Like all 3.5eb ford engines….this thing needs a tune! What are folks going to go with? I know livernois and ZFG advertise one thus far. If you haven’t run a tuned 3.5eb, they respond very well and often get +50-100hp on pump gas.

Anybody that supports HP Tuners should be able to tune it. Because the Strategies are being updated by Ford so quickly, there could be a delay in getting a tune, after you read the Stock tune. Personally I am a fan of ZFG, and also prefer HPTuners hardware, because you can get tunes from ZFG, MPT, 5Star. Go with Livernois and you are stuck with their hardware...and their tunes.

This is a good point. HPT seems to be the tool of choice for most. Certainly if you are planning on more stuff in the future. Those using HPT do require some data log info before they build and email the tunes, correct? I have the FP tunes on my raptors. Mild in comparison to others, but im not building race trucks.

You will use the RTD4(Current Device needed to tune the newest PCM's) and the TDN app on your phone to read the Stock and submit to your Tuner. Then they will send a base file. This is where there could be a delay if you have a new Strat, because the tuner will need to contact HPT to define it. After that you will receive your base file, and load it and do some logging per instructions. Send those and most likely get a revision. This is at least the base process ZFG follows. I did confirm with Adam@ZFG that he can do the 25's eventhough they are not listed on the HPT website as supported.

What tuner did you go with?

Ended up with the Livernois. This will be tuned once and that’s it….and I’ve had their stuff in the past. For a base type tune, I think all the big players are close. If it was my DD, I might have gone the HP route bc I like to tinker. But it’s wife’s.

Is there a basic primer on this site to help this new Expy owner understand tradeoffs between Livernois and ZFG? I had a motorcycle tuned and needed to send in the ECM; took about a week before I was back up and riding. Will this be similar?

Nope. Both can currently tune the current PCM's from the OBDII port. Livernois's hardware is locked to them. Using an HPTuners device, you could pay for tunes from ZFG, MPT, 5Star, and many others. Also can buy credits for other vehicles and tune them with the same hardware. Livernois, one tuner, is locked to one vehicle, and if you want tune another vehicle you have to pay Livernois to Unlock it. One vehicle at a time. Livernois's tuning has gotten much better for the 10R80(Trans) in the past few years, on my 2020 Expedition it was CRAP! The reason I like HP Tuners is the customization that most tuners can do. If you don't like a particular shift, ask them to tweak it.

This needs to be in a "tuners for beginners" thread.
Excellent starting out before you buy info.

Does a tune void a warrantt?
Can the tune be easily removed?
Does a Livernous tune have normal, tow, sport, etc. modes?

All the tuners, your modes still exist, how they are tweaked depends on the tuner.

Power exists across all the modes, but shift points and throttle behavior can be tweaked per mode, just like the factory settings for modes.

Yes, a tune can affect Engine warranty. Say you blow the motor, and you were tuned...yes it could be an issue.

I leave my tune installed on mine when I take them in. I have a good relationship with my Dealer service department, and have never had issues. Had a new Motor installed in my 2016 Edge Sport when it was tuned. The issue was a factory issue with the heads on 2.7 EcoBoosts, so in no way related, but no issues.

What Loki said above.

Yes will void warranty. But a tune alone (from a reputable company) is unlikely to cause issues or require ford to even “look” for an aftermarket tune. Yes can be retuned to stock in a jiff via the module. My livernois came wit a performance tune and a tow tune, again via the module. As a bonus, livernois completely shuts off the ASS. I can imagine a tune with CAI and the new full-race manifolds will be HOT! That is my plan for this expy. I’m sure the HPT based tunes all work the same way too.

I tend to remove my tunes before I take mine in. From what I can tell this saved my bacon recently, as I had to take mine in for some warranty work (phasers again) and while it was in, they did the O2 recall, which changed my PCM strategy codes. If it had been tuned, my understanding is I would have had to go through the process of getting an unlock code to change/remove the tune. I still had to pay 5star for a new strategy update on my existing tunes, that stung a bit.

Interesting. What hardware are you tuned with?

Using the bullydog tuner with 5star tunes. Once I got the rig back, I waited a couple weeks after service just to make sure everything was good, and tried to reinstall the tunes. It failed every time saying it was "missing the vehicle files". That's when I noticed my PCM strategy code went from PMGM0C7 to PMGR2A8. Once 5star updated the tune files, it worked flawlessly. They told me if I left it tuned, the device wouldn't have been able to return it to factory without and unlock code from Bullydog.
