I recently purchased an immaculate 2019 Expedition. It has 98k miles on it and I have the service records. When I purchased it, I noticed that the MPG computer read something like 17.3 MPG for 4500 miles. Seemed reasonable. I decided to reset it to see how my mileage looked. I was shocked to see that in 80% city driving (Philly) and 20%, I am getting no more than 11 mpg. I scanned for codes, and there were none The only issue with the car is that there is no Active Grille Shutter system (was removed), but I can't imagine that being that much of an issue. I already ordered a replacement Motorcraft engine air filter, plugs, and Mobil 1 oil for the 100k service interval, because I don't want the crap that the shop puts in the cars from the drums.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with MPG? Any thoughts on troubleshooting steps?

I am not looking forward to the MPG hit when I pull a load.

Stop and go isn't really a good indicator for mpg, because so much will depend on how much you're accelerating, idling, and average speed. But your best chance to improve the mpg is to keep the engine out of boost by staying low in the RPM band and coasting as much as possible. The 17 number is slightly higher than I get in normal driving around town. But I can get over 20 if I really try.

I do alot of city driving with many many stop and go red lights stop signs etc...Think Boston city. I get about 11-12mpg in city with Auto stop and start OFF. When Ford does their MPG testing they aren't actually driving in a real city with alot of stop and go with auto start and stop turned off. So the 17MPG rating is pure BS. Its more like 12mpg. I dont drive agressive at all and feather the gas pedal when accelerating also. Also.. I get anywhere from 20-22 highway

If you drive in a real city with auto stop/start off aint no way your getting anywhere close to 17mpg even driving like miss daisy.

The town u drive around does not compare to city driving

That’s not unusual. A few miles at 11mpg is not a measure of the vehicles overall fuel consumption. I get that (and less) around town, but have averaged 17.1mpg over the past 4500 miles. Steady interstate it is over 20mpg. These are my numbers and are on par with what everyone else has said.

Don’t worry too much about it; specifically, based on what you have noted, it isn’t broken.

Notice how everyone on this thread says "i get 17 around TOWN" They dont do actual city driving. Towns have far less red lights, stop signs, pedestrians. Its not real city driving. Of coarse they are getting higher mpg. Many people on here live in rural areas and their "City" is like a suburban area.

Your 11-12 mpg City is normal.

I understand what you are saying, but i think even most people who live in big cities are not on congested streets getting 11 mpg most of the time. I lived in the Houston suburbs for 44 years and got decent mileage because getting anywhere around town included some amount of freeway driving. CAFE ratings for both freeway and city take this into account. It’s the opposite of why I can get 25-28 on 100% highway cruising so why is the highway rating 22-23.

Highways in texas are alot flatter and rarely any traffic. No climbs. Im not surprised u can get up to 28 mpg in texas highway driving.

I get 20-22 highway because my highways are not always on flat lands. Plus the highways im at have traffic so im luck to get 22 on a good day without highway traffic. Its all relative

I have a 2022 Expedition Platinum and right now I'm averaging 23.5 MPG. I drive a mix of city and suburban roads. A lot of mileage depends on your driving habits. Jack rabbit stars doesn't help. I don't wait until the last minute to brake for a light or stop sign. Many times I can coast to the stop which helps. A lot of stop and go driving will kill your gas mileage.

My 2017 Platinum did the same thing right at 100K. Several people told me it was the mass air flow sensor, I cleande it with minimal results. Was starting to believe folks that told me my turbos were failing. Just on a whim I picked up a bottle of Lucas Oil fuel system treatment. (I have no affiliation with Lucas and have never believed in additives and miracle cures). In one tank of gas I went from averaging 13 mpg to 19. Now I add a bottle every 3-4 tanks and still am in the 18-19 range. Not saying it will cure your vehicle, but for $10 it’s worth a shot. FYI when my EXP was new I got about 20 hwy, and 17 in “town”. I’ve pulled my 4500 pound boat about 30K, and mileage usually would drop to about 14. It was hitting 10 before the fuel treatment, and returned to the 13.5- 14 range after. I now have 111K and mileage seems to be holding up.

My 2019 Expedition in normal mode gets 17 to 18mpg city. However, we are very flat here.
My highway mileage from Florida to Georgia, doing 70mph, gets 25-28mpg using Eco mode.
If you have access to Forscan, reset your tcm and pcm settings. My mileage was weak when I first got mine. After resetting, the vehicle relearned my driving habits.

I bought 2 expeditions in the same week. Both used. A 2019 with 125,000 and a 2020 with 87,000. I do city driving everyday. I have been averaging 17.4 in the first 3 gas tank fills. Back story is I have a 2011 f150 ecoboost supercrew which I make 14.9 at the lowest and about 15.9 on the same trip over the last 2 years. So I love the boost and not shy about about giving it the gas when I want to go. I love the power. So long story short is I can drive the expeditions as hard as I want and cannot do under 16.5. I really do not know the service history on the expeditions, because you know nothing other than oil changes and piddly stuff is recorded in carfax.
