Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum, but I've been an Expedition owner for 13 years. She's primarily been a secondary vehicle, but for some years she was the primary. Her name is Gladys btw, and she's my daughter's absolute favorite vehicle. I always said that if I ever had the time and money I'd do a complete custom restoration/build. Fortunately, that time has finally arrived. I don't want forced induction, I have my reasons. But she's going to be used as a secondary vehicle and for towing (small boat and camper). My daughter and I will be doing most of the work, she's 10. Safety first of course!
I'd love it if anyone here would be willing to share their two cents on the parts and work I'm planning to do. I've broken the project down to 4 phases. I'm doing this over the next 4-7 months. What I can't do myself I'm sourcing out, mostly machine ship and body shop for that though. I'll upload more pics as I go throughout the process.
Basics: 1998, XLT, RWD, 4.6 Windsor, 4R70, 280k miles
Phase 1a - Engine pull and rebuild
1) Keeping the Non-PI block. Machine shop for cleaning, resurfacing and boring .020 over and honing.
2) Purchased a set of PI heads from an 02 F150, Windsor also. Doing a port and polish job on those.
3) Cams Comp Xtreme Energy - XE262AH
4) Eagle Stroker Kit - (B14407W020) being assembled and balanced at machine shop
5) All new timing parts. Valves, springs, retainers, chains, guides etc
6) Adjustable Cam Gear Sprockets
7) MLS +.010 head gaskets (should I get shims?)
Phase 1b - Engine reassebly into engine bay, drop off at pro tuner
1) painting the engine and bay with a friend of mine
2) BBK Long Tube Headers
3) 42lb flow fuel injectors
4) BBK 75mm Throttle Body
5) PI Intake Manifold (I can't seem to find any good aluminum intakes so it's looking like I'll have to go with the Dorman plastic one unfortunately)
6) K&N Cold Air Intake
7) Torque convertor from a 4r100 to lessen the torque conversion rate
8) Shift Improvement Kit
9) Full Motor and transmission mount kit
10) Dropping her off at a pro tuner
Phase 2 - Suspension, Brakes, Gears, Wheels, Tires
1) Full front Mevotech suspension premier 12 piece kit
2) Bilestein B8 Shocks front and rear
3) Moog Coil Springs front and rear
4) Full Power Stop brake kit. Cross drilled and slotted rotors, double piston calipers in front, single in back.
5) Full rear diff master rebuilt kit, changing her to 4.11s
6) Going with 275/65/18 Firestone Destination LE3 tires and wheels
Phase 3 - Loose Ends
This phase is the final stage before I drop her off at a body shop for a new paint job. This stage is when I'll be tying up any loose ends in a sense. New headlight fixtures, window motors and regulators, dash, speakers etc. Too much to list. Nothing performance based here, just function and esthetics.
Phase 4 - Drop off at body shop
I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton, but I think y'all get the picture. Thanks for reading, and any feedback on any of the work or parts is greatly appreciated!
