We have a 2017 2WD Limited with 56,000 miles. We just came back from a trip to Flagstaff, elevation 7,000 ft. we are at 1100 elevation, and averaged 21.5 driving at speed limit +5, or 70 in some places, 80 in others. We went to San Diego recently and averaged 21 driving at speed limit +5, again 75 in CA, 80 in AZ. I am using regular unleaded with 87 rating. Seems like I am getting 19-21 around town also. I am very pleased with this mileage.

That’s what I’m now getting and wouldn’t mind squeezing more if I can!

My 2000 has no rust, you idiot. Mobil 0w30 is the same oil as 5w30. Its 30w that flows, cold quicker. The label says, "fuel savings, for 5w30 engines". I have used it. Adding a couple pounds of air, to tires is hardly rocket science. Did you ever ride a bicycle, with a soft tire. Its kinda hard to pedal. Oh yeah, we all know your some kind of ' tuning expert'. What a joke. Keep running that over boost and pushing 20-1 compression. Disabling/ignoring your knock sensor(s), for power pretty stupid. Your motor will be toast in no time. Great advice dude!
My sensors are all enabled and I safely push 20psi only at WOT. Barely any knock at full throttle. Daily driving is around 15 normal acceleration. You’ll never understand living in the past, delp!

I guarantee you have rust also. No 19 year old daily driver doesn’t have rust

I'm curuius to the mechanics of it. Are there waste gates that are tightened up, variable turbos? What does the ECU do to actually increase the boost? Timing, Fuel curves, even cam timing makes sense as well. I just don't know enough about these motor's turbo system to determine how the boost is increased.

The wastegate is electronically actuated, so the ECU can send a signal to the wastegate actuator that will determine how much pressure is allowed before it opens. If you keep it closed longer, you wind up with higher boost, up to a limit (the turbo can be spun too fast, which just heats the air instead of efficiently compressing it).

and if its over speeding the turbo will stall and cause compressor stall, which means no boost, just loss of performance

That’s why they have me at 20-21 psi. Perfect amount before the turbos just start heating the air

The motor has a 'knock sensor' mounted under the intake. When spark knock is detected, it pulls timing(less power/mileage). Running premium gas will give maximum performance. 100+ degree temps, will also pull timing. Inflate your tires to 37lbs, that will save some fuel. Run Mobil 0w30, that will save fuel. By comparison, my 2000 4.6l gets 18mpg on the highway. 19mpg may be as good as is gets.

I get all that, my questions solely involve the managing of boost using octane. Timing, injector curve, etc makes sense.

Thank you! I had a feeling this was the case, but haven't had time to research these motors to that detail. Cheers!

Please don’t tell ppl to run 0W30 in a vehicle that requires 5w30. If it says a specific weight, use that weight people. Where did you get 37lbs from? What info do you have to back this up? I run 47 in mine and get 23mpg with 35s. I hope you’re not giving out tips again based on you owning a second gen 19 year old rust bucket.

To further emphasize your apparent lack of intelligence on ecoboosts, these trucks have 2 knock sensors. Running my tune I see +1 knock at WOT, 5 Star has this ****** dialed in. Please do t give advice to ecoboost owners if you have no idea what you’re talking about or basing your advise on a 2000 mode year

Pg 307 of the 2017 Expedition's owner manual. Until Ford puts out an additional approved oil, 5w30 is all it gets.
