My 2025 Platinum Max received an OTA update in the last week. The update note says this is a staged update with various changes & features being added over time.

Here’s what I’ve noticed…

New features
1) Tachometer added to speedometer display
2) Current time now displayed (small) on IPC near exterior temperature display
3) Choice of large analog or digital clock display can be selected. Small clock display disappears when large clock is displayed.
4) Cruise vehicle-length gap setting selection has changed to repeated press of gap button on LH steering wheel touchpad when in cruise control mode (more or less gap buttons are now gone).

Issues
1) Maps (both Google & Apple) turn-by-turn display on RH side of IPC has disappeared. The area is blank. The screen displays an error message to the
effect ‘unable to get source data’ (my words).
2) I’ve experienced several complete IPC & Infotainment screen reboots while driving. First Apple CarPlay gets disconnected then both the IPC and Centre displays go blank. After 20-30 seconds both come back on and 10-20 seconds later CarPlay is available again. Once, during the reboot, Blue Cruise was disabled. This last I’ve not been able to repeat.

I forgot to add under New Features:

5) Added an app to provide the ability to “cast” to the infotainment screen from a mobile device. For an Apple device user “casting” is not seamless like Apple AirPlay. It appears to require the app and some device setup that I have yet to achieve. The next time the rear seats are filled with squirmy grandkids and grandma has run into a store I’ll spend the time to get it to work.

I believe manufacturers should be required by law to provide a written explanation of every update or change to the vehicle with OTA updates.

The updates are a repair to the vehicle while under warranty. An invoice should also be provided.

The manufacturers should have to mail and email a written explanation and invoice to the owner(s).

GM does this same silly stuff. Some updates introduce more problems and defects, and require a future OTA update.

I tried the google cast and it requires you to have the connectivity package with it.....so a useless update in my opinion. Why would I pay for a wifi hotspot through my truck when I already have it on my cell phone? I'm sure there's a few people out there that need the truck wifi hotspot, but I'm sure it ****** more people off than it pleases

We have the Expedition on a 5000 kM road trip. We’re about halfway now. The issue with Maps (both Google and Apple) not displaying the turn-by-turn on the IPC seems to have been resolved. How the problem was resolved is a mystery as I did not receive notice of a Ford OTA update having been pushed out nor has either of our iPhones been updated in the last couple of weeks.

We have experienced one system reboot during the road trip. It was about 8 hours of driving shortly after a pit stop for coffee. The active Apple Maps displays via my iPhone’s CarPlay connection, on both the IPC & the infotainment screens, froze. After about 30 seconds both displays went completely blank for 20-ish seconds. The displays lit up again and after 15 secs the system connected via CarPlay to my wife’s iPhone’s Apple. I had to manually reconnect to my phone at which point Maps returned to active route.

There are apps available from the Google Play store and maybe Apple's store, (Not an iPhone guy), that allows casting to the screen. Or you can purchase a box that allows android boxes, phones, etc., to cast to the screen.

That's common if the vehicle is still installing updates. Also, anytime you have a phone issue, disconnect/remove troubled phone from car and re-pair/connect it. It fixes most issues. The only other issues are phone compatibility related, due to age, firmware versions or just android vs. apple.
I always have theories, that if an apple device is failing on an android system, or an android device is failing on an apple system, it's deliberate. I only say it because all my years in the industry has proven there are no reasons why the device is malfunctioning and apple or android offer no solutions, other than suggest getting the compatible device.

I agree with Mr Big; that is a tell-tale symptom of an OTA installing in the background. Updates to the APIM (which manage the IPC on the newer Fords) install while the vehicle is on and running as opposed to the ones you schedule while the vehicle is parked. I do find it odd that they would have pushed two different APIM updates within a 2-3 week window. Even if the initial update they sent you somehow broke that feature, it would have taken Ford longer than 2-3 weeks to fix it and release a new OTA to the masses. Very strange indeed.

Having the IPC go completely blank during an update install, while driving, seems an odd decision for Ford’s engineers to make. It could be a safety issue if it happens at the wrong time. A warning to the driver to slow down & pull over or hold the speed steady might be appropriate.

I don't disagree with you. However, it may be done this way due to the nature of the module that is being updated. The APIM is is updated via ethernet and not CAN bus because it would literally take a few days (or longer) to update the APIM if it is done while the vehicle is off and parked. What Ford should do is put some kind of pop-up message warning owners that the screen(s) will go black for a bit so it does not catch people by surprise.

This is assuming, of course, that the screens going black was due to an OTA. I would need the VIN to check if that is the case.

I was told by a Ford tech in the Ford Digital Experience department that updates NEVER happen while driving. Vehicle has to be stationary.

Last OTA was for the APIM and it was sent and installed on 8/12; nothing has been sent since then.

See the screenshot above. Under the "vehicle inhibit" column, there is a GWM and a TCU update that say inhibit is not required. Those updates installed while the vehicle is on. I am surprised to see the APIM update required the vehicle to be parked and inhibited. That module traditionally always gets updated while the vehicle is on and running.

I'm pretty sure that's what I said: "updates NEVER happen while driving. Vehicle has to be stationary".

Perhaps the verbiage I used was unclear. Vehicles do not have to be parked and inhibited for all updates. In the case above, two updates on that list installed while the vehicle was on and running.

Correct and I agree. But on and running does not also mean "moving", which is what the tech relayed to me. The vehicle will be stationary, but on with the engine running.

Ah gotcha. I can tell you with certainty that is not the case on Sync 4 vehicles. Not sure if they changed something in regards to this with the digital experience equipped vehicles. That could very well be true. I guess we will find out as more and more OTAs are sent out to these vehicles.

Yep, that's where the confusion lies. I wasn't referring to Sync4 vehicles, as we are in the 5th Gen 2025 to present Ford Expedition forums which doesn't use SYNC4 but uses the new Ford Digital Experience Android based firmware/software. The tech also told me we will also receive updates, when the vehicle is off and parked, through the vehicle's cellular/modem system and external Wi-Fi.

I experienced another reboot while driving 2 days ago. It took place about 20 minutes after a restart following being stopped for a couple of hours or so. After the reboot the turn-by-turn map (both Apple & Google) did not display on the IPC. A notification to the effect (getting map data) was displayed. The system recovered to normal after sitting overnight*.

*”overnight” was a 19 hour ferry ride to Newfoundland. After restarting to drive off the ferry the map display had returned to normal. Interestingly the only issue we experienced, not OTA related I believe, is we had a very annoying buzzy rattle that would only go away after opening a window about 1” or more. The rattle stopped after a coffee stop. Weird, weird, weird (to paraphrase Rocky).

Very strange indeed. Just ran your VIN through PTS again to check for any codes it may have reported to the cloud, and it's not showing anything.
