You are lucky they released. When I tested mine on a 2000, they locked up.

This is a bit of a can of worms. After you replace the broken cable, you'll probably find the shoes and springs in the rear drums/disks rusted into a solid mass. Usually the linings break off and clank around the drum until they're gone.

If you have to replace any cable that goes through tubes, use the old one to pull the new one through if you can.

The parts are cheap and the work's easy. Summer job.

Finally got to repair of the OP … parking brake broke. My favorite shop (Deweys on O'
Connor Road in Fairport) done good again. They replaced the two rear cables and free'd up and lubricated the brake shoe actuators. Also topped off the rear diff (I have a slow leak on one side shaft) and gave me a NYS Inspection (MrTobe hates those). $361
