I saw a couple posts recently regarding power folding mechanism failure. I'm here to tell you that 30 seconds of your time every 3 months can greatly lengthen the lifespan of your power folding mirrors. Refer to the picture below:
This is the close up view of the hinge area after power folding your mirror. The smaller opening, labeled A, is where I want you to shoot white lithium grease until it begins to ooze into the larger opening B. That's it!
My 08 Expedition (now with a second owner), still has its original power folding mirrors and they are super quiet. The guy still follows this procedure I taught him. The Expeditions I currently own have never seen a single power folding mechanism failure yet, and they get this white lithium grease treatment regularly.
Moreover, if you are currently experiencing clicking/ticking sounds while power folding/power extending your mirrors, the grease will immediately make them quiet if any mechanical damage hasn't already been done.
Note: the picture above if of a non-power folding unit, but the openings A and B remain the same.
