Power Running Board Noise

During a recent long road trip, my wife and I continually heard strange wind noise at higher speeds 70MPH+. It would come and go but sometimes lasted for extended periods and concluded with a thud. I can't figure it out, but think its the power running boards deploying slightly and then retracting back. Thoughts?

Mine are loud:
1) when driving off slowly, typically already facing forward, and they begin retracting, seem like they bang/this against vehicle underside/mounts. I initially thought I was having suspension issues.
2) the motors themselves are noisy and the dealership said that was part of normal operation.
