2011 XLT, Truck has 155k on it. I drained & filled the rear differential at 95k, when I bought it. I just did this drain & fill again yesterday. Upon removing the FILL plug I found this piece of metal stuck to the magnet. When I pulled the DRAIN plug there was the usual very fine metallic on the magnet. The fluid looked great tho. It drives fine, before & after drain/fill. No noise or shuttering etc

Any idea/shot in the dark what this is or how truly worried I should be?

Yeah I’d be worried. That’s a piece of your clutch pack… Thts unfortunate. I’d get that replaced asap or your gonna have some bigger problems on your hands soon

Well damn.
I have no idea what the cost would be on that. Any suggestions? Would I be having the rear differential completely rebuilt or find used/aftermarket? Rebuilt clutch pack?Etc
According to the driver door sticker I have the 3.15 (15)
I do mostly kid hauling & interstate. Would I loose much mpg going to a 3.31 or even 3.55? The little bit of extra low end grunt would be nice tho.

I think you can just replace the clutch packs. I know I had faulty ones on my 2016 platinum EL with 3.73. They we’re sticking causing a grinding noise when turning from the rear. Ford had carbon fiber upgrade under warranty and installed them with some type of friction modifier additive. They were able to do just the packs. It was also a limited slip diff
