Good afternoon all,

I'm currently driving a Ram 1500 Outdoorsman for a number of years and I love it. But my mission has changed a bit and I'm looking to move into an Expedition. Two big dogs, two teenage kids, and all the things that go with traveling to sporting events and the like. Is the FX4 the only variant that has the various terrain modes and locking rear diff, or is it available on other trims? I saw that the FX4 is only available in the short-wheelbase models, which is fine so far, but I'd like to see the newer one in person and break out the tape measure.

Appreciate the input,
Chris

First off, get a Max, the extra room is hardly noticeable while driving and someday you will be glad u have it.

My 18 Limited 302A has all the terrain modes as the CCD suspension adjusts to all of them.

FX4 is also available in the Max long wheelbase version. The 3:73 gears, low range transfer case, and rear locker are also available as part of the towing package in non-FX4 models.

As mentioned above, the lockable LSD and terrain modes (and 2 speed transfer case and HD radiator) come with either the FX4 package or the heavy duty towing package*. Both packages are available on either wheelbase. So what's the difference? The towing package gets you the integrated trailer brake controller and the trailer backup software and is available on any trim level. The FX4 package gets you skid plates, different wheels** and rubber floor mats for the first two rows, but is only available*** on the XLT trim with the 202A package.

To further complicate things you can get both the FX4 package AND the HD trailer towing package. If you don't want the backup software, you can also the FX4 package and add the ITB as a dealer installed option.

*Or any package that includes the HD towing package, like the Texas Edition...
**and AT tires, but the tires usually require a protracted fight with Ford and a state with a "non-conformity" clause in their lemon laws.
***Order guide for 2020 posted elsewhere in these forums implies that the FX4 package will be available on Limiteds as well as XLTs.

Thanks for the guidance. That really opens up my options a bit. The FX4 inventory is a bit limited in my geo, it would appear. So good to know there are other choices.

As someone else said get the Max!!!
The added space is a huge plus.
We have 3 in car seats and still need a roof top cargo carrier for trips. If I did not have the EL (granted I have a ‘16) we’d need a hitch mounted cargo option too.
