Rear window defroster wiring

On my 2022 Timberline, the rear window defroster coil wire -- that runs from inside the body to the window glass -- broke off at the solder tab on the glass. Only 18,000 miles on the truck. Anyone have experience with how the dealer fixes it? Any warranty issues? It seems like I can fix it myself, but want to see what the options might be. Many thanks.

Happened to me, as well. Mentioned it to the dealer and they only wanted to replace the entire rear glass. I was able to use a soldering iron to heat up the existing glob of solder, reinsert the metal tab, hold it there for a few seconds to heat up, remove the iron and let it cool down. It's been holding strong ever since.

Happened to me, as well. Mentioned it to the dealer and they only wanted to replace the entire rear glass. I was able to use a soldering iron to heat up the existing glob of solder, reinsert the metal tab, hold it there for a few seconds to heat up, remove the iron and let it cool down. It's been holding strong ever since.
I'll give this a try (as soon as my neighbor returns my soldering iron :mad:)

I guess I’m not alone. Mine came off my ‘22 a couple months ago. I haven’t address it yet, but interested to hear just whipping out the ol’ soldering iron should do the trick. You’d think after 70 years of rear window defrosting we’d have that figured out.

Be super careful if you try this. there are many many stories out there of folks using soldering irons on these and shattering the glass. Most things I've read state that you need to take some serious time with a heat gun or at least a blow-dryer and warm up all of the surrounding glass slowly. the hot solder on cool/cold glass seems to be a recipe for disaster. Ford doesn't even try to repair them, they replace the glass in most cases, probably because of this.

Very valid point. Don't use a soldering gun for this kind of repair, it's unnecessary and overkill. I used a Hakko iron set to 650 with a rather small tip that I use on PCB's and small point to point wire connections. Iron contact was probably less than 5 seconds total and I did my repair in the summer without any kind of preheat.

I just repaired mine on my 22 timberline. I just used a soldering gun. As long as the window isn't cold, it's easy to do.
I can't believe they want to replace the glass for this repair. Now that's overkill.
It was soldered on there when they built the vehicle and I'm sure they're not busting windows when they do it at the plant.

This is true, but it's very easy to control the environment and temp in a controlled setup like a glass fab. For all we know, they solder those contacts on just after the glass is laminated, while it's still hot after putting the actual filaments on. They may also be using a solder with a much lower melting point then the typical consumer electricians solder.

I Don't disagree with you on waste though. Blew my mind, but that's partially why their warranty liabilities are as high as LEO satellites now.

What I was able to find out is that Ford/Motorcraft used to sell an electroconductive paste/glue, but stopped selling it. Local dealer confirmed that they would REPLACE the whole rear glass. If not under warranty that is wasteful and expensive. Never had any problems with defrost tabs in previous Toyota. Mine fell off just shy of 5 years. I have not tried "Frost Fighter" yet, but did try Permatex version with no success. I did follow the directions except disconnecting the tab from the wire was difficult and I tried it "in place", which did not work. I agree that soldering or heat gun to reflow probably comes with some shatter risk. I may try Frost Fighter and if that fails then a heat gun to see if it will reflow.

Mine also came off ‘22 Timberline. I had to pay $225 to dealer to solder back on. Fell off month later. Didn’t address is for a while but had dated photo. They said “sorry, we got a new place we deal with.” Now they are both swinging back there. I think this should be a recall. How do we make THAT happen?

Happened to me. Took it to the dealer under warranty. They have a repair kit that they use. The non-warranty price was $150, mostly related to labor.

This just happened to my '22 Timberline as well. Dealer said they need to replace the window. Been waiting weeks for a new window, so going to try the soldering fix while it's still hot out.
