Hi everyone,

I’m looking to replace the shock and coil spring assemblies (both front and rear) on my 2006 Ford Expedition. It’s a 4WD model with factory-installed coil spring suspension. The OEM shocks and springs have held up well over 107k miles and still provide a stable ride, but they’re showing significant corrosion. I’d like to replace them before any leaks or failures occur.

I came across a set of Monroe Quick-Strut assemblies that look promising, but I’ve read conflicting information online. Some sources suggest these assemblies are specifically designed for air-to-coil spring conversions, and there might be bolt spacing issues for my factory coil suspension setup. Since I don’t live in the U.S., shipping costs for four assemblies are quite high, so I want to ensure they’ll fit before ordering to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Here are the part numbers I’m considering:

  • MONROE 171369 Quick-Strut (Front)
  • MONROE 171370 Quick-Strut (Rear)
Can anyone confirm if these will fit a 2006 4WD Expedition with factory coil spring suspension?

Also, I’m curious about the quality of Monroe products. Are they a good choice for durability and performance, or should I consider a stronger alternative?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,
MC

I don't believe there is a bolt spacing difference in the Gen 2 model(2003-2006) between the coil and air spring mounts. They'd have to replace the mounts that are welded to the frame to have different spacing. I used the Rancho Quicklift struts to replace my 2004 air suspension, even though Rancho, now owned by Monroe, says they won't fit. They fit just fine. I don't think I got any lift in front. I have a normal rake in the rear, about a 3/4" of lift as I recall the air springs sit level.

I have used Rancho suspension on all my trucks for over 30yrs and I love that I can adjust them. Soften them for road trips, tighten them up for around town handling, and crank them all way up when towing.

The Monroe Quick-Struts listed on RockAuto note that they fit both coil and air spring trucks.

MONROE 171369 Quick-Strut
Fits Front; Front Coil springs
or Front; Front Air springs; Converts Air Spring to Coil Spring Suspension; Requires Monroe Part # 90015C

Despite my experience noted below for this price I'd try the Monroe's especially since shipping is gonna cost you. If you're ordering from the US, you can get a full set of Monroe now for $254 plus shipping. I would personally avoid the Monroe RoadMatic series, the QuickStruts are certainly better.

I used to buy only Monroe shocks and struts for stock vehicles. The last few times I have been less than impressed with the Monroe brand. The last 2 sets had 1 or more struts that squeaked and drove me nuts until I replaced the upper mounts. That was both on GM W body cars though. I have found KYB and Bilstein to be a little better. None of that experience is on the Expedition though. I swapped my Expedition's air springs at 160k miles for the Rancho struts and then replaced them again under warranty at 290k due to the lower mount bushings being crushed.
