So my wife called me while I was a work saying that the expedition made a nasty screech. When I got to where she was parked, I drove it around the block with her and didn't hear much other than what sounded like a rock bouncing around in the wheel and then silence. I hopped back in my work car and my wife finished the 3 or so blocks back to our house and then she sent me this video saying it started screeching about halfway home. My apologies to your ears (uploaded to YouTube since it wouldn't attach here).

Anyways I took it for a ride tonight up and down the street, stopping, starting, reversing, swaying, anything I could do to get it to make a sound and got nothing.

Any thoughts? I can't see anything out of place and the pads appear to be decent. Still under 50k miles (2019 max limited).

I would be shocked if the rear pads are still good with 50k miles. I have had a 2019 and a 2020 and neither made it to 50k without needing pads.

I know right? We had our cam phasers replaced just over a year ago and they pads registered 9mm in the front and 8mm in the back according to the dealership video they sent me. Maybe after that they start to degrade a bit faster? I haven't got a chance to measure them myself to be fair tho. I was just surprised that I was not able to get them to sqeal. Maybe it was due to the fluctuating temps here in Utah?

I never hear the squeal as soon as my wife. She will tell me it's making noise and then I drive it and nothing.

All I know is the rears on these usually do not last 50k, it's very common for them to be done between 35-50k. New ones will last much longer though.

Funny how that works huh haha.

I know the rotors look good after a quick glance, so I think I should be ok on those. I'll have to look and see what good pad options are out there.

I haven't needed to replace the rotors on the back, just the pads. The rotors should last a lot longer.

I was told some years ago that the lane control thing uses an application of the rear brakes to correct the direction of travel. Also I've noticed that our 2024 rear discs do not show surface rust over night like the 2021 and earlier yeas did. Maybe they changed the material being used.

Traction control, trailer anit-sway, abs, lane control, some of the specialty drive modes, descent control, anti-roll back, etc all uses automatic application of the rear brakes which does contribute to rear pads wearing faster than us old timers are used to. I noticed this first in my 2007 jeep that has various forms of traction control. Also, the stock pads appear to be a cheap organic pad that wears quickly. The ceramic pads I put on mine as replacements don't seem to be wearing nearly as fast.

Yeah these things have a lot of tech in them that use the brakes thats for sure. Which ceramics did you go with? Are they very dusty/squeaky?

Traction control is the first thing that is shut off in any performance car I've owned.

Not for any other reason than easy ordering on amazon, I went with powerstop pads. I want to say there are the powerstop evolution pads. I just did the fronts and used the z23 carbon fiber ceramic pads. I have not noticed any dust or noise from either of them.

I use ebc green stuff pads on my jeep and they are extremely dusty.

I'm late to this discussion, but last year I started driving and noticed an insane squeal like that, just out of the blue. It sounded like a freight train. I was right near the dealer, so I pulled in immediately. A quick trip down the service drive and they realized it wasn't the brakes. They were kind enough to take the vehicle right in and they discovered a rock about the size of a peanut M&M that got wedged behind the rotor! They were very surprised to find it there.

The first year I took my 20 FX4 hunting, while traveling on a gravel road, I suddenly heard a noise that sounded like a punctured tire blowing air while I continued to drive at ~25 mph. I expected to see TPMS light to come on, I quickly switched to the TPMS screen only to find all 4 tires equal and steady pressure. Within a minute of the start of the noise, I pulled over, and inspected the vehicle. What I found was a golf ball sized rock wedged between the caliper and the wheel on one of the rear wheels. I put it in reverse and rolled back a few inches and the rock fell out. It had machined a "V" groove in the inside of the wheel rim a few thousandths of an inch deep, that is still there today. The noise was the machining of that wheel.

LOL. I used to do the same until I got my GT500. The same button on that car speed dials Good Year.
Ha, same with my M, have driven without TC only a few times and almost ate a curb once. How do you like your Gt500? I'm looking for an 11-12 hardtop with the Svt Pp and moving on from the Cobra. Kona Blue, Black, or that darker grey.

?? Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not understanding, doesn't your TC when activated reduce engine power? Had a situation where I was following a friend, both driving Vettes, moving along quickly and went down on of those long, wide, sweeping off ramps. Anyway he hit some sand and the ass end stepped out a whole bunch he caught the curb as his TC cut power and prevented him from applying power to enable him to get away from the curb. I with my TC shut off luckily was able to stand on it and slide it and avoid the curb and his car. Yup, we were going too quickly and for our punishment we spent an hour waiting for another friend to bring us a tire and wheel as his were junk.

Yes when TC is on and kicks in, it will drastically cut power to the rear. If off, your ass-end will swing to the right in a hearbeat. That's why there's also another setting, MDM mode, which allows for much higher TC threshold when it cuts in, for a more "spirited" driving experience. So regardless of the driving mode, you have to feather the throttle somewhat, or else you get TC kicking in, or roasting the tires if TC is off. Especially on asphalt. On feeder road concrete, it hooks pretty well with the DWS06 tires.
Sucks about the incident but sounds like it could have been alot worse.

Thanks for explaining. The Vettes were either on or off, no other settings. It could have been a whole bunch worse. The price ya gotta pay when you play.

I love it. Mine is a Kona Blue Convertible with Silver Stripes. It's very well balanced, it's been very reliable; I make sure that it goes at least 3 digits before I will turn it off, every time it starts. I bought it new in 2011 and drive it often. It has 62 K miles. The only failures it's experienced are a Climate door actuator, a power seat gear, and the intercooler water pump.

If everyone had one.....the world would be a much better place. Just saying.
