99 expo 4wd with 5.4l. had shifting issue for years where i would need to slam shifter over to get it in park. assumed loose bolts or stretched cable. few weeks back lost engine belt and tow truck driver slammed shifter over so hard it broke shift tube. i took apart dash and have replaced shift tube. but it wont shift. rock solid now. took shift cable off transmission and shifter shifts fine. cable moves freely when not attach to transmission. any ideas are appreciated

I have repaired many of those shifters over the years. Sounds like the shift interlock solenoid is stuck or not getting power when it should. The column needs to work properly without the shift cable connected first.

yea shifter works when the line is not connected to trans. soon as its put back on doesnt move at all. i think your right. if tow truck driver slammed it hard enough to break inner and outer shifter tube the solenoid probably got damaged to
