I would look around for a low mileage, donor engine. Your current engine should still run and is not going to die soon. Try switching oil filters. I stopped using 'paper' filters. I was getting a slight rattle, on cold start of my 2001 4.6l DOHC Lincoln. Since I switched to Mobil 1 and Fram Ultra synthetic, no noise.
