Don't get me wrong, I really like my 23 Expedition since trading in my hybrid F150 for it. It's a great SUV all around...except the software has nagging bugs that should not be hard to fixat all. Examples:

I've always been disappointed by the response time of the phone app when trying to remote start and remote unlock. Sometimes it would take a full minute or even fail. So when the most recent software update actually says "ensuring reliable remote access from your mobile app" I got excited. Unfortunately the update actually made things worse, a lot worse. Now 9 times out of 10 the remote start spends a minute thinking about it and then puts up an "X" denoting failure. Its not like I live in the boonies. We are talking about strong cell signals and even on wifi in front of my house.

The recent phone app update wiped out all of my data, so I had go through the password reset hassle while on vacation.

Also, I found out at a very inopportune time that one of the recent updates wiped out all of my saved trailer calibrations. I had to find an empty parking lot big enough to calibrate my 7x16 cargo trailer at six in the morning when leaving on a 600 mile trip because I knew I would need the hand's free backup. Another "feature" of that update is the fact that the software still calculates my miles remaining based on the 8mpg I get pulling the cargo trailer. I disconnected the trailer and made sure there is no active trailer in the menus. That was ten days ago and 20 times at least starting and driving the truck. Also refilled the fuel and it still is calculating my remaining mileage at 8mpg to this day.

Don't even get me started on the running boards and having to leave my door cracked when I park in my garage to keep the stupid running boards from going in and out uselessly. Not to mention the delayed retraction setting in the menu has been broken since I got the truck.

Also, not being able remember the setting disabling of the motion sensor alarm is truly frustrating. Just today my dog set off the alarm for at least her 40th time while I was in the store.

Then there is the smart cruise control that I had set to limit to 10 mph over the speed limit. Only problem there is there are spots on the highway near me that the Expo nav software thinks are 45mph when it is actually 70mph and slams on the brakes in traffic. Even better is the area on the way to my cousins house where for the last year it thinks the speed limit is 85 so sets my cruise to 95mph and sends me back in my seat with acceleration! I had to disable that feature for obvious safety reasons.

Recent updates also made my Android auto wonky. For instance after hanging up from a call the radio is muted for some reason and I have to turn it way up to hear it. Of course minutes later it will figure that out and suddenly be way too loud. Android auto also disconnects randomly now when it never did before. I have the latest and greatest phone so that is not the problem.

That is enough for now. I really do love this SUV, which is why these things are frustrating because it seems like the easy stuff to fix.

This is a problem across all industries regarding software, unfortunately. ‘Developers’ are not skilled at all. They are coders. The people in charge of the development process are no better - hell our own IT department is headed by an accountant!

A good example is putting climate controls on the screen: a basic investment in market research would have told you that it’s not a good idea (Tesla design not withstanding).

I have a 22 Expedition Platinum and I don't have any of those problems except one. There is a spot on the expressway that thinks it's 45 MPG when it's 55. Yes sometimes it takes a minute for the app based remote start to start the vehicle but never had a failure. I use my key fob mostly to remote start which I heard they were not going to provide that option anymore. They need both options in case the app isn't working properly.

The absolute dumbest thing is when using the digital speedometer, pressing OK changes from miles to km. It's so easy it's possible to accidentally switch it when acknowledging an on-screen prompt. I mean, who switches from miles to km so often that it needs to be right there on the OK button? Stick it in the settings section.

Ford electronics is very weak at best! Their sound systems up until 2024 sux. Android auto not great. My 2024 f550 stereo much better than in my 19 expy, but the android auto in the 2024 sometimes does not start properly. I dont always notice until moving.. "some programs disabled for safety. You must stop. push the android auto button.

There are dumber software issues related to speedometers. In my Durango, you could switch between a digital speed display (numbers) or a graphic representation of an analog speedometer. The problem was that the needle in the graphic representation was one tick off. You could have the cruise control set for 70 and the digital display would say "70", but switch to the graphic representation and the needle would be pointing at 69. Come on, man!

actually when I was in Mexico for 10000 miles and 4 months last year, that was REALLY handy. I think better in miles, but KMH was better for local speed limits.

I have the B&O system in my 2019 Limited, and its been generally excellent, and the only trouble I've had with Android Auto is my USB C cables get flakey after a few months. Using a Pixel 9pro with the latest Android (just updated tonight to the May 2025 update). Sound quality at sane volume levels is as good as I could ask for.

Check this out. I was dubious because wireless is almost never better quality than wired, but I've been rock solid for several months now, including a trip from Dallas to Utah last week. Running a Pixel 8Pro myself.

It was so frustrating previously and I kept thinking it was the cables, but this has fixed the issue for me.

to be honest, software is frustrating, as is dash layouts, etc, but if I were asked where to spend the limited QC budget Ford has, it would be 100% on mechanical.

As for wireless android auto, that's really nothing new, I wish the Sync3.4 supported it but it doesn't.

Fords software problems are all on them. They are not a software or technology company. They left a lot of the software integration to the developers of their modules. The vehicles have a lot of modules controlling different parts of the whole car. Window modules, wiper modules, interior light modules, ABS modules, headlight modules, steering modules, blah blah blah. None of this stuff is linked together or designed to be upgraded over the air or controlled from a single point. Its a joke. If you want a vehicle with good technology and consistent software updates, get a tesla. They know how to do software properly. Not ford.

All of the modules communicate over the CAN bus or LIN bus.

...and they can all receive new firmware over the cellular link.

But that still doesn't explain the warranty's 24 hour Road Service phone number being accessible only on the Sync screen. Who thought that was a good idea?
