Tire Wheel Size Changes Questions - 2022 Expedition Platinum

How has the ride been with the 20s? We are planning on changing wheel size from 22” and debating between 18” and 20” and running the defenders for tires. Those look great btw!

Ride is great! Just like the stock 18” wheels and tires that came from the factory.

My 2019 came new with 22's... when I got it at 60k miles, I replaced those with some 18" 'take-offs' from a new F150, that had OE Territory AT or some such. cheap OE highway/terrain tires. I've put 10000 miles plus on those now, much of that on bad roads in Mexico. I look forward to upgrading to BFG KO3 or equiv when these stock tires wear out.

note 18's are happiest around 35 PSI f/r on a Expy. the 22's were 39 PSI, I think. They are much nicer going over things like RR tracks, pavement transitions, etc.

Hello - new here and investigating going to 20" wheels from the 22" that came on my 2021 Limited. I have also been researching the Bilsteins as I would like to just level lift the front of the vehicle. I see you also have AM sway bars F/R.

Did you do all of the suspension mods at the same time? What size wheel were you running when you did the Bilstein modification and how did that affect the ride in your opinion? Curious what changes you notices with the F/R sway bar mods when you made them.

All things I am trying to sort and the order of which to do first before moving to additional mods. IE: Tires -> then Bilstein -> then sway bars? Or some other order at which point I might be satisfied with only one or two of the mods. One thing for sure is the 22's have to go!

What tires do you have now? My 22s have the smoothest ride of any tire I've ever had. Of course I do have CCD suspension which may make a difference.

The stock Pirelli Scorpion Verde AS 285/45/22. They ride smooth, on smooth roads but I feel like I can "feel" the unsprung weight of the wheels over the rougher cracks, potholes etc. Looking to go to 275/55 20 wheels and gain an extra 1" of sidewall to absorb some of the harshness. I also just don't like the aesthetics of 22" wheels. Then I would probably do the Bilsteins to get a level lift and improved handling. Not sure how much the sway bars would add if I did the above two mods.

I did test drive a Platinum with the CCD and do believe I wouldn't be looking for mods if I had the CCD other than to get rid of the 22's for personal preference of the look of them.

CCD on my Ex must be the difference. What tire pressure do you have in your Pirellis? The vehicle sticker suggests 39 pounds. I run 42 to 45 in my Defenders.

39 per the sticker. 42+ will just make the ride harsher. Usually only 1 or 2 passengers and no cargo or trailer. Ordered some 20" Expy wheels and will keep the 22's so I can test them both and make a final decision. Then sell which ever ones I settle on and then get the Bilsteins.

@aksarben First I swapped the stock wheels with aftermarket 18”x9”s, then I did the front/rear Hellwig sway bars, moog endlinks, then months later did the Bilsteins. Sway bars greatly reduced the bobble ride these have on the highway and improved cornering (less body leaning). The bilsteins stiffened up the suspension over the stock Squishy feel. Hitting potholes or bumps can be felt greatly compared to the stock struts/shocks. This may be due to running the highest ride height setting in the front and second highest height setting in the rear (compresses the springs making for a stiff ride).

My recent mod was switching the wheel/tire package to OEM 20”x8.5” on Michelin Defender LTXs. Ride is a lot more softer with no vibration at 70+ MPH unlike the Generals they replaced. Hope this helps.

Just food for thought. I went down to a 17” wheel. 295/70 R17
