I’m repairing the leaking compression fittings on my transmission cooler lines under the radiator. I’ve cut the outer shell and removed it and the hose from the hard line. I’ve bought new rubber hose.
My thinking is I don’t trust just clamps to hold the hose on without a barb at the end of the metal line. I’ve tried to get the hose to pass over the barb left behind by the compression outer metal shell, but no luck, the hose is just too tight. I’m sitting on my garage floor and need some quick advice.
Should I go get a flaring tool kit and try to make a hose barb on the end of this metal hard line? I know lots of YouTube videos of guys cutting off the compression fitting and just hose clamping the rubber on, but transmission cooler line is considered high pressure. I’m afraid it will blow the hose off the hard line with just clamps alone.

I'd put a slight flare on the end. Then the clamp can't slip off. Sure you can't oil it and fit it over that rib and put a clamp behind it?

There's not much pressure, and while people use hose clamps (or two hose clamps) alone all the time, I would want a little flare to keep it from sliding off over time.

You're still my hero Kevin.

Worst case you can just double clamp it. It's not a real high pressure line anyway. If it leaks after double clamping then maybe look at some other cure. If the hose is too stiff to get over that bump you have on the pipe now, it's not gonna do any better getting over a barb you put in it.

Use a fuel line clamp (instead of a standard clamp) so that it does not cut the line.
I like this idea. Unfortunately I don’t have any and parts stores close in 10 minutes. But I’ll shift gears and go back to installing the good transmission. That should be more than I can get done tonight and I’ll go look for those fuel line clamps in the morning.

I bought a $30 double flare kit from O’Reilly. I’m not strong enough to tighten the tool enough to get the flare, but somehow I got this first one done. It’s enough of a barb to hopefully keep the hose from slipping, but was still able to get the hose on over it. I decided double flare thinking a standard flare would leave a sharp tube edge cutting the inside of the hose. If you haven’t noticed already I’m the king of over think and then over kill, lol.
I did file off those burs the flare tool left on the tube.

Looks great. That hose isn't going anywhere! Too hard to double flare a steel tube like that with a Chinese tool.

Your right, it’s too hard. I didn’t do the last step to actually fold the flare inward. Not sure if that’s a bubble flare or what, but I have a barb to hold the hose clamp and the tube not cutting the inside of the hose. I think it will work.

Next day I was recovered enough that I did a better job with the flare tool. It’s all finished, no compression fittings on the trans cooler lines.
