Quick update, so far so good on how things feel and the tranny has been staying a very constant temp which is good to see. But man I was annoyed, the night I brought it home, I noticed a bad and pretty loud rattle, anytime the vehicle was idling in gear, but not moving, i.e. sitting in the driveway. So today, put it up on ramps (which stands to be safe), and pulled the entire RCI skids off. I was going to do this no matter what to clean everything, given that everything was covered in tranny fluid from when it essentially blew. Man was it everywhere. But once I pulled them off, I pretty quickly found the issue. Looks like the dang tech lost two of the nuts that go on the heat shield studs on the tranny pan. Not only do the nuts look missing, but it looks like he or maybe the first tranny tech mangled the heat shield holes pretty bad.

Luckily I had some black oxide nuts that fit perfectly, and I used some small washers to help ensure the heat shield stayed in place. It was literally hanging down on top of the crossing Y pipe. I'm assuming they had to remove the Y pipes to do the tranny work, and it also looks like when they put them back together it was slightly lower which means it was coming in contact with my skid plate a little. Rotated and fixed that as well.

Super annoying, I'm actually annoyed that they didn't even try to clean the skid plates either, from all the oil. they've had it for almost 10 weeks combined. Why can't these guys have a little more pride in their work, the heat shield is the easiest part. I also noticed the external transmission cooler is slightly larger than the old one, maybe it will work a little better.

Update: a couple months and 3k miles ago I had a rebuild done. Everything was fine at first but then it started shifting poorly again. Took it in today and they confirmed another bad CDF. They’re pushing for Ford to give me a new crate transmission over another rebuild.

Really hoping for a new crate transmission at this point as they said there was a large quantity of metal found throughout the transmission the first time.

Wow. Sorry to hear this. This is part of why I really don't think I can but another Ford/Lincoln. Not to say (fill in the blank) would be any better. I just extended my extended and plan on keeping mine until the issues start, then I'll try to figure it out.

Just got word they are rebuilding and not replacing after all. Even the service writer wasn't too thrilled with Ford's decision about that (he even recommended I dump this truck before the warranty is up). We were planning on getting another Expedition after our Ford ESP runs out in 24k miles. I'm not feeling so confident that Ford has a handle on the situation and it's going to be a few years before anyone is sure that the revised CDF actually resolves the issue.

We need a car that can safely seat 8 with room behind the 3rd row up at all times. Expedition- not again, Suburban- same transmission, Sequoia- not the new one with its engine issues. I'm thinking I'll be looking for a 2022 or earlier Sequoia soon.

I didn't think the sequoias were nearly as big inside as the full-length Expedition/Navigator/Suburban.

their not, especially with what they did to the rear cargo area for the batteries.

They’re not. And as mentioned above, the new Sequoia is even worse.

That’s really a bummer for us as we have 4 kids so the 3rd row is always up (and ideally the entire 3rd row so each kid isn’t touching).

It exists - it is called a minivan. If you don't need to tow and just move people, they are hard to beat.

UGH! Don't tell me that.

I'd be curious what the ratio is, between those that have had good outcomes with rebuilds vs. replacements? This just can't become another 5 visits to the dealer in 6 months. I just don't have the time.

Mine is back at the dealer, service advisor thinks at this point they will put in a cost cap claim and just replace the whole tranny, sure hope that's the case. but could be several weeks again, lovely This may be the end for me. there's just nothing else out there. Already talking to ford support about possible buy back again, see what happens
Finally got mine back with a “new” transmission installed. They told me it was a new crate trans. I can’t decipher from the RO if it’s new or factory rebuilt. We’ve put 900 miles on it. It’s better than before, but still not perfect.
Upshifts are smooth but 5-3 and 3-1 downshifts still clunk occasionally. We’ve got to be done with the re/learn period by now?? As soon as we get thru the holidays I plan on trading it in.
