2019 Expedition 4x4. No towing. Had the valve body replaced around 50k and the software upgrade done last year. Been having every so often some harder downshifting into lower gears as I’m slowing down. Probably 1-2 times a month. When I go into reverse every so often I get a hard clunk going into gear. All the other times smooth s glass. I have the extended warranty. Worth taking it in at this point? I’m thinking I probably should

How's it do when hitting the gas on the highway to pass a slow mover? Any bad clunking, false neutrals, errors?

Unless you have a verifiable problem that generates an error, it's not likely going to be worth taking in. The reverse thing could possibly be generating error codes in the system. If you take it in, likely they'll run the diags and check for codes, and they'll hold you responsible for a diag fee. If it's like mine was for the first rebuild, it'll be full of error codes and then they'll take the whole thing to the extended warranty company, and you'll only have to pay in for whatever the warranty requires you to. If it comes back clean, then you'll likely have to pay the diag fee.

75K on my 2019 and the transmission has been fully rebuilt twice, under extended warranty.

I was reading an article and the author suggested that the software is the cause of most of the problems. Might want to see if you can get a total reflash with a later year like 2023 or 2026 if they can do it.

Yes, I took mine in under warranty at 104k for some hard downshifts. They kept finding stuff and replacing it. It did take a while, almost a month. I have a Ford extended warranty that paid with no issues. The bill was $8700. It is so good now you have to watch the tach to know when it shifts. I had lots of problems I didn’t even know about.

i've disabled the transmission learning and erased the data tables for it. and often drive in sport mode. almost completely eliminated the hard shifts up and down. occasionally it will search for gears if i'm aiming downhill while decelerating and turning hard to aim back uphill while in 4wd mode. i bought my 2020 xlt max fx4 at 71k, almost 2 years ago. everything factory has been updated and also the 80k service, nothing big has been done (rebuilds etc), just periodic maintenance.

*edit*
it's my belief based on this, other expy's and many other ford equipment (>1 cvpi's, >1 mustang v8s) that the software is tearing apart trans components cause it's trying to be too smart about adjusting it's operating points. so far, i'm right for vehicles i'm the sole operator of.

Hi everyone.

My 2019 Expedition has 65k miles and all these transmission discussions have me worried. Recently I've had the hard shift from Park to reverse (whole truck jumps) but only when the vehicle is cold. To eliminate the "clunk" into reverse, I first go into neutral for a few seconds (and watch the RPMs drop); then the shift to reverse is smooth. Still, I'm almost hoping for a problem so I can get my rebuild before the warranty is up. Does anyone know the stats about what percentage of these transmissions develop serious problems?

I have been wondering about the transmission issues for a while. I hate the auto stop bull crap. I one time followed a car through a drive through fast food. The car stopped and restarted 8 times. I put an auto stop delete in mine with only a few thousand miles. Other than shifting into reverse hard a few times when first started in my garage, I have not really had any issues in a 120k mile. Not real fond of the few times that it set my parking brake while parked in my garage either.

As I started this thread with minor issues with shifting, I had it in at the dealer for a cracked valve cover leaking oil and mentioned my issues shifting. They performed the TSB and are installing a new drum. They say it's a 2-3 day turnaround. Should get ford approval on the extended warranty this morning. Sure glad I have that now.

Makes sense you need a new CDF drum assembly. When I read your original post and you said they only updated the valve body I immediately assumed you could have a bad CDF drum with worn teeth which is a super common failure. The updated drum is anodized creating a harder surface which should eliminate the wear. Also with the new drum assembly you will be getting an updated bushing design which is the second issue you likely have. The bushing in the old design moves out of place allowing oil flow into clutch packs when it should not be. With this new CDF assembly and valve body you should be good to go! The only risk is if there is any debris from the failing drum that contaminated your valve body. But I assume they will inspect and clean it as necessary.

I'm optimistic they will do a good job. We'll see how far they go with other parts like the clutch packs as the TSB says as needed.
