TSB 24-2188 4WD Grinding/Clicking/Ratcheting Noise From Front Wheel Area - July 23, 2024

This bulletin supersedes 22-2219. Reason for update: revised Part List and Service Procedure to clarify applicable steps by vehicle application

Issue: Some 2003-2020 Expedition/Navigator and 2006-2020 F-150 (non-Raptor) vehicles equipped with 4WD may exhibit grinding/clicking/ratcheting noise from the front wheel area. This may be due to partial engagement of the IWE. To correct this condition, follow the Service Procedure to remove and cap the vacuum supply line or to reprogram the TCCM and replace any worn vacuum and/or IWE components.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet the following criteria:

• One of the following vehicles:
- 2003-2020 Expedition/Navigator
- 2006-2018 F-150 (non-Raptor)
- 2019-2020 F-150 (non-Raptor) equipped with a torque-on-demand transfer case (with 4A position on the MSS as shown in Figure 2)

• Equipped with 4WD
• Grinding/clicking/ratcheting noise from the front axle area

Warranty Status: Eligible under provisions of New Vehicle Limited Warranty (NVLW)/Service Part Warranty (SPW)/Service Part New Vehicle (SPNV)/Extended Service Plan (ESP) coverage. Limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. NVLW/SPW/SPNV/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.

If the TSB is followed for the torque-on-demand feature (2015 Expedition Limited 4x4) - it eliminates the 2WD feature and only enables 4A, 4H and 4L?

You are correct that TSB 24-2188's torque-on-demand Service Procedure, removing and capping the Integrated Wheel End (IWE) system's vacuum source, fully deactivates 2-wheel drive capability.

Per the 2015 Expedition Workshop Manual, which essentially describes all the TSB-affected model years...

When the 4WD system is in 2WD mode, the 4X4 control module supplies a ground path to the IWE solenoid to apply vacuum to the IWEs (disengaging the front hubs from the front halfshafts). In 4WD mode, the 4X4 control module does not supply the ground path to the IWE solenoid, vacuum is not applied to the IWEs and an internal spring keeps the front hubs engaged to the front halfshafts.

You probably can’t answer - but why would Ford provide a TSB that eliminates a vehicle feature that the owner purchased? Why wouldn’t the TSB have instructions on how to repair the feature?

What does a Ford dealer do when a vehicle owner with the torque-on-demand feature brings their vehicle for repair - but does not want the 2WD feature eliminated?

I am having this issue with my F-150 and I found this post that shares how to actually repair it so that the 2WD feature isn't eliminated.

In short, you can order the part number FL3Z-3A788-B for about $20 and replace the white check valve with an updated blue check valve.

FWIW: I have a '19 MAX FX-4 w/ HD tow and it either came with the blue valve or the valve was installed later. I believe it came with the valve since I haven't had the truck at the dealer in 2-3 years.
