At least once per lifetime, but usually every generation (that's 25 years or so), **** has hit the fan one way or another, in their own backyard, just about EVERYWHERE, as long as anybody can remember
War, civil war, violent political upheaval, natural disasters, famine, disease... hell just general poverty and urban collapse that you can't afford to get out from under, with gangstas playing wargames outside your windows in what just a decade ago seemed like a cozy classy hood... house burns down. Tornado or flood destroys all you own...whatever.

People get complacent from living the good life. Frikkin paradox, the better they live, the fewer small steps people are willing to take to safeguard their continued prosperity.
