Had a 2018 Expedition Platinum Max that we really liked but we had a ton of issues with it.

Traded on a 22 Suburban LT (using a GM Exec coupon) that has been trouble-free, other than a massive freaking blind spot on the A-Pillar that my wife just can’t adjust her seat to see around (I even installed seat track spacers). We've almost had a couple of accidents in traffic because of this, and it’s a common complaint on the GM board.

We’re considering trading it back on a nearly new Expedition. (Trade in is so strong the Burb cost us almost nothing to drive for 6 months). I just can’t swing $80k for a new Expy.

Would buy 19/20/21 Max Limited or Platinum around $70k, CPO with Ford extended warranty. Under 30k miles.

I know mid 2020 got the new 4-bolt head cap thing that supposedly fixed the cam phaser issues.

Is 19 new enough to get rid of clicking mirrors, ticking wastegates etc etc. ?? Local dealer has one that only has 28k miles and looks clean. They also have a late 20 build with similar miles but that one has a deposit on it :/

Why do I want to trade the burban if it's trouble free? Do you not like it? Since coming from a platinum to a mid trim lt, is it a hard transition?

Presuming it's a Ford dealer you're speaking with, you could ask them to show you a VIN-specific OASIS Warranty Repair History and TSB/GSB/SSM summary for the vehicle you're considering, as a useful supplement to a CarFax history they might provide to you, and possibly Service work orders describing their reconditioning and/or repair actions prior to reselling the vehicle.

Good luck!

Isn't a new 2023 Expedition Max Limited from Granger Ford (at 3% under invoice) around $70k? Why even take a risk on a used one with less warranty remaining?

personally I would hold off. at this point, unless you have spare vehicles, who cares if it's got a warranty when you're vehicle may be in the shop waiting for something for 90 days or more. Some folks on here have had theirs in shop for 120+ days in a calendar year. Some of us rely on these things daily and a Ford escort isn't a viable rental/loaner. and that's if ford agrees to fix something before ignoring an issue or worse, blaming you for it.

Anything before 3/12/2020 is a safe build date
Not true. Units built before 2020 have to deal with poor cam phaser design, the original versions of the 10R80 (new units supposedly have updated clutch drums), and a host of other issues (sticking thermostats come to mind).
