Which generation Expy to add to your fleet?

J, this is a little off topic, but do you know what year they fixed the oblong cylinder problem on the 5.0 F150 motor? Also, is their any other items to worry about? Or are they dependable engines.

17-19 3.5 EcoBoost and 5.0 engines are having a lot of camphaser related ticks and knock noises. Off throttle rattles and the like. 12-16 was a pretty good run but ford just overhauled both engines for 18’ and they are having problems.

Well that's not good news. Maybe I'll look into Nissan and Toyota like I did back in the 70's. What a shame companies like Ford and Chevy have so many problems. I've read the Chevy pickups go through transmissions like every 100k. Who knows their engine problems. Last thing I want is to be arguing with my Ford dealer over a new truck.

Ford recently released a TSB for the 5.0 that supposedly fixed the rattle. No solution for EcoBoost owners as of now except pulling the timing cover and diving in.

I’m tellin ya, these 1st gennys could very well be the best truck engine by Ford in terms of reliability, longevity and low maintenance.

I’m really struggling w what to buy. We need something here in the next couple weeks and my wife texted me a 2013 AWD SEL Edge at our local dealer with service records for our son to drive.

Dang it I was hoping this was my chance at getting a newer ride. Will try to fight the wife off and buy that 2011 EL I have my eye on.

You posted this thread on 1st Gen for a reason. Have fun building another one all over again. Or better yet good project for you and your son. Besides do you really need your truck telling you your tire is low? other creature comforts ya'll can have fun putting in both of your trucks together.

Don't they make aftermarket tire sensors and warning system that you could splice into a 97-02 model? That and have a machine shop lock in good 8 nutserts for the spark plugs, and you got a 300 k truck again. Couple of tweaks to get close to 300 hp, and you got a brand new-used SUV.

Eh I like stock w as much oem as possible to keep things reliable. Just me.

On those gen 3’s the first thing I would swap out is the stock oil pump for the Melling or Jasper.

I'm not sure if this applies to the Ecoboost, but I would never buy a Direct Injection engine! A simply youtube search will explain why. Either stay with Port Injection or and engine with both Port and Direct, but never only Direct Injection. The engines are designed to lose power and gunk up from day one....!
