I am looking to tackle replacing the left side Exhaust studs.

Last night I removed the fender liner on the driver's side to prepare to replace the Exhaust Manifold studs.

Wow, these things look difficult to get to. I can't even see the bottom ones through the wheel well. At this point, to avoid breaking anything off, I would love to be able to just cut the nuts off and leave the whole stud behind. Most of the nuts look so rusted they are round.

I also don't see how to get at the one in front behind the master cylinder.

I also want to replace the studs and nuts that bolt the manifold to the Y pipe. Is it a stud with a nut on each end? Again, lots of rust, so it's hard to tell.

I was quoted $650 at a dealer, and the parts are like $50. With that much difference, I really don't want to pay that much to have it done.

I sprayed penetrating oil on them last night. I'll do it again tonight.

Any advice? I haven't been able to find much info online about guys doing this repair themselves.

Any recomended "specialty" tools?

One of the mechanics pulled one they did a couple months ago. It was quoted as 6 hours, studs, nuts, y-pipe studs and nuts, gaskets all for one side.

Well I need the Expedition for work, and I can't afford to pay to have it done. So I guess I'm moving forward with it.

A buddy of mine has a lift in his garage and every mechanics tool imaginable. He asked me why I wasn't driving it and I told him about the exhaust manifold. He said he's done it 4 or 5 times and would basically do it for me at his place if I play gopher. I am waiting until he gets another car off of the lift in a week or so.

I'll report back.

I have been spraying penetrating oil on the studs every couple days. I started with Liquid Wrench brand, but I have now switched to PB Blaster. I started it up the other day. After a couple minutes, there was smoke pouring from the manifold.

Nice.....someone who has done it before is a bonus.
especially someone with a lift.
