You could have a pump going out. These SUVs are not easy on their steering parts. They weigh anywhere between 5,800 to 6,000 pounds.

True... could... but when I run the rpms up to 2k the steering is easier... it's something I've learned to diagnose from a Ford mechanic... this is what they do to diagnose that the steering shaft is bad... then visually look at the steering shaft to look at the u-jionts... my u-joints appear to be binding... easy fix... only 2 bolts and 8-10 pumps to get the shaft out... I'll be doing it in the morning... pretty confident prob will be fixed... no leaks or seepage from pump... fluid level good

In your #5 post you stated your problem is at all speeds, yet in your #12 post you state it's fine above 2,000rpm. Which is it? You also state in your #1 post how to tell if your power steering pump is going out, then you post in #12 post that your mechanic friend taught you how to diagnose p/s pump. Then you state that the steering shaft is bad. No offense but if you want our help, then decide your gonna change a different part anyway, and know the solution, why bother the forum members. We have each over 30-50 years experience diagnosing Ford vehicles. As the old saying goes, if you don't want the advice don't ask, or at the very least keep your diagnosis and questions consistent. Remember we all do this free of charge. Moose.

I don't see the confusion... it's obvious I consulted with him after I posted...i know what I was thinking... conducted further research and consulted the mechanic... who taught me a quick diagnosis to know if it was for sure the power steering pump... my truck doesn't get up to 2k rpm driving... so I had to rev the engine to do so and turn the wheel as they would so at the dealership.. that gives the indication that it's NOT the pump... no need to change the pump when it's NOT the pump... where is the confusion... steering shaft is part of steering and my joints are seized... which is why I have this prob...

So if u rev the engine to 2k and it doesn't get better then they look at doing other things to isolate other components such as the pump and other things mentioned earlier as possibilities...i asked the original question cuz I know it could be more than the pump...

Sorry if I ruffled your feathers, but in the past members on the forum were given step by step advice and totally ignored it. You can imagine the frustration on our end. Keep in mind your going to get answers to your problems that will be procedure, like any mechanic would do if it was a customers car in their shop. Others will shoot out guesses. Sorry again if I came down hard on you, it's just that we've had our share of flakey members. Let us know what you find, it will help fellow members.

Diagnosis was right...the old steering shaft locked up and had no rotation in the u-joint...2 bolts...1 on top...1 on bottom...cleaned the bolts... areas shaft connects with the bolts on the truck... put new one on... steering wheel feels like it did when I bought the truck...

So if u ever have right steering then loose steering... sticking points where it's hard to turn like the power steering is going out... rev up to 2k and turn the wheel left and right... if the steering gets easier when rpm is 2k and higher... start with the shaft... the u-joint has seized up and u need a new steering shaft...

If it doesn't loosen up... look at other components

Nice and smooth turning with my pinky again...lol2de6675012a820f0137023e3510dbfa8.jpg753066ce91e51b9f199aacfcb17c7f01.jpg9d62cbc70e191ece3ba132931579b7ba.jpg

Good deal, glad it turned out to be an easy one. If only the rest of life was that easy! Moose.
