The 2017 factory parts diagram for the windshield mysteriously lists two different inside rearview mirrors:

  • W/ AUTO DIM, W/ CAMERA, W/ MIC
  • W/ AUTO DIM, W/ O CAMERA, W/ O MIC

I'm wondering what factory option utilizes a camera and microphone in the inside rearview mirror?

The "camera" mirror of course means an LCD screen in the mirror and not an actual camera. The camera goes on the tailgate.

2017? Here's what I know. In 2008 the mirror with reverse screen became available. The navigation was made by Pioneer at the time and it didn't support a rear-view camera. In 2009, Clarion began making the navigation systems so back up camera appeared on the navigation screen, unless you ordered the camera with a non-digital radio (6 CD Changer or 1 CD Changer without navigation). Then you got the screen on the mirror. Perhaps in 2017, the mirror screen was used with base radios when a back-up camera was ordered.

Generally the mic is only used withe the navigation option. But I'll bet in 2017 Ford has an option for some Sync system to handle Bluetooth phones without the navigation system and its screen. So it would need the screen in the rear view mirror for that and the mic for the phone Bluetooth. That's only my guess.

That makes sense. "Camera" could mean screen for the backup camera. This still seems odd though because 2015-17 models all have a screen in the dash. Some are 4-inch, others 8-inch but all have the backup camera in the dash screen as far as I know. . .

SSV model would be my guess.
My Taurus interceptor has the rear view camera display in the mirror and not my dash screen that is the same as my Expedition screen that displays the rear view.
I presume it is the same for the Expedition but have not been in one to confirm.

For 2015 - 2017: Is it possible that the mirror has a sensor in it that adjusts the brightness on the dashboard screen for the backup camera? Just guessin'

It’s for the rain sensing wipers. My 16 platinum has it. Works like a champ every time I forget to shut them off before a car wash.

That's what I was afraid of! I'm planning to add rain-sense to my truck and I was hoping it was just a matter of adding the sensor. Older models use only that and nothing else. I'm guessing they must have upgraded the system in 2015. . .

OK, just got my 2017 wiring manual. There is no camera as part of the rain sense system -- just the rain sensor. Guessing the mirror "with camera" must be one that has a video display screen for the rear view camera option for vehicles that don't have either a 4-inch or an 8-inch center dash screen. . .
