Well, I received the news today that our 2018 Expedition Plat Max needs the Phasers replaced. We got 100,000 miles out of them. Our extended warranty expired about 10k miles ago. Went in today for CEL P0018 and P0021 and running rough at times. Has everyone just had the dealer do the job, or is it worth exploring other options, such as an independent shop?

TIA

For purely informational purposes, curious if you had the option to renew or extend your warranty, how much it would've cost, and why by chance you opted not to assuming you did?

Stinks about the phasers though, not even sure there would be much of a difference between dealer and indy prices... Might be worth the dealer as it's new enough not too many indy shops would be familiar with them.

Most dealers will be kind of like mine has been. They've got a "Cam Phaser" guy and a "Transmission rebuild" guy. Those will have done many of these repairs and even though more expensive, they can do the job in their sleep. A local independent shop will do a good job, but working on many more issues on many more types of vehicles, they won't be near the expert of what you are likely to find at your local dealership. Such is the case with common failure items like this.

Never had the option to renew. Extended warranty was aftermarket not a " Ford" product if that matters.

That is sort of my thinking as well. It's more of a piece of mind than anything to have the dealer do the repair.

For issues on 10R80 transmission and 3.5 ecoboost engine, yes, I would go with dealership as well. Specific tools and experiences matter here.

Does this seem about right?

Dealer Estimate below:

Variable Cam Timing Solenoids and phasers to address check engine light and rattle noise:

Labor diagnosis and repair 2989.00

Parts 955.00

Shop supplies 100.00

Total $4044.00

Thanks.

Yep........10.5 hrs at shop rate plus replacement of guides and solenoids. Just make sure the replacement cam phasers are the new and improved. One might add the thermostat.....new and improved part. That's all I can add.

Yes, the dealer confirmed they would be using the ML part number, and this was via email, so I have it in writing... I asked about the added cost for a new timing set ie chain, tensioners, and guides. Good idea on the thermostat. Anything else?
