In this video I go over in detail the procedure to swap out the Cam Phaser to get rid of that annoying knocking noise at idle! It is easier than you think. The procedure is the same for all 4.6l and 5.4l 3valve engines.

How about the solenoid, do they ever go bad or is it usually the phaser?

The solenoids do go bad but mainly on engines that haven't been maintained then they gum up and stick.

If you are worried about them just pull them out and inspect the screens for damage and or varnish. The are just a T20 and slide right out.

Probably bend you over. They know what it is there is, I had even found a bulletin they put out but when I asked them, he said..."it could be anything, we would have to pull it in and diagnose it by tearing down the upper half if the engine"...yah he must think I'm crazy

I would say $600 for one side, that being the phaser is like $200 something by itself. Like 900 for both sides.
