I removed wheel and disc brake and used a hammer to pound out one of the studs, but there is not enough room to remove the extracted stud (much less replace it with a new one).

It seems like the next step would be to remove the piece that the holds the studs (hub?), but I can't figure it out.

I removed the emergency brake, hoping this would allow me more access, but the combination of "maintenance" has left me stymied. Before I schedule a visit to the Ford dealership, and the parting with what will be hundreds of dollars, is there a way to get this done, or at least get it safe enough to drive so I avoid a tow charge?

I've looked around at multiple sites, and it seems like they refer to "dropping the axle". What does that involve? The wheel doesn't turn at all right now, and it seems like I can't put the truck in neutral. Right now, the wheel actually doesn't rotate at all.

I have only had to do studs on the front of mine. Is there room to extract it if you spin the wheel? Might have to jack up the other tire and put the axle on stands to get it to spin. Otherwise you could cut it out, but that does not solve the problem of putting the new one in. There is no wheel hub back there, so I do not think that this piece comes off. Can that dust shield be removed at all?

I would remove the axle to replace the stud(s).

You will have to open up the differential to remove the C-clip.

The pinion shaft has to be removed, its held in by a small retaining bolt.
This allows the axle to push in slightly to get access and remove C-clip then the axle is free to come out.

Very easy to do other than the mess from removing the cover and refilling the fluid.

Given my abilities, it sounds like it needs to do to dealership. :( any risk in driving without emergency brake?

Well if you can jack up a car and not kill yourself then you can pull the axles. We pull axle shafts on a daily basis at work, no big deal. I would expect someone has posted video on youtube to help guide you.

1) Rear end dope stinks - use laytex gloves and a pan to catch it in when you pull the cover and another at the axle flange.
2) Looks like you have a leaking rear wheel seal in the pics - I'd change both sides and the vent in the pumpkin. It needs to be "open".
3) If a gasket is available for the cover I use it instead of gasket maker.
4) Once the axle is out you can change the stud. Use a small sledge to drive it in or if you have air impact you can use the lug nut to pull it in after starting it with a hammer.
5) Re-assembly is reverse of removal. There are splines that need to line up for the axle to seat. Once you figure it out they will go in easier.
