So I believe my satellite radio module has gone out completely. It will no longer let me access the satellite bands with the aux button. Does anyone know the process for replacing the SDARS module? Does it need to be reprogrammed by ford, or is it plug and play?

When that unit failed on my 08, I was able to purchase a used unit of eBay, it is located under the center console, I changed it out and everything worked in the car without having to reprogram anything. The only thing I can’t remember is if I had to contact Sirius to change the radio ID, I don’t think I did as I believe the unit code is stored in the actual radio not the receiver box, but I could be wrong. No special tools were required, it was an easy job to do, getting the plastic covers off the center console was the most awkward part.

2008, the SDARS is under the center console. This is pre integrated.

Gary, thank you for your response. That was what I was looking for. Now I just need to figure out interchanges.

Year & model? After 2011, the modules are incorporated into the head unit.
I am curious. I have a 2013 XLT with a basic AM/FM/CD/Aux/Sirius head unit. It also has bluetooth integration for the phone. But the display is so limited as to make the phone operation user vicious. Can I step up to a higher level head unit from the used market and perhaps even get a rear camera? What would I look for and how do I make the vehicle accept the upgrade?

Yes, you can upgrade to the OEM NAV unit but you'll need the additional amplifier, wiring harness, and backup-camera harness to bring the camera feed from the mirror to the head unit. This runs anywhere from $800-$1400 for 10+ year old technology and no upgrade options.

For about half that, you can upgrade to a modern headhunt with CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and multiple cameras and use a Maestro box to interface with the CAN-BUS system and steering wheel controls. Usually $500-$1000 total.

It’s been a minute since I was on this thread. For anyone who has this come up there are 4 different part numbers for the SDARS module and it looks like they are all interchangeable. It is plug and play and you just have to swap it out.

I have a 2008 Ford Expedition EL Limited with the following factory radio…8L1T-18K931-DA, when I look at the “system Info” the SR (satellite radio) ESN is missing.

It does have the SR tab in the menu field…do I need to purchase a separate module for this unit to work? I do have a navigation disc installed and the navigation works.

Thanks,Jeff
