Just sold my 05 eddie bauer. You might remember it:

http://www.expeditionforum.com/f41/error-codes-error-codes-more-error-codes-21023/

http://www.expeditionforum.com/f44/fuel-injectors-ruined-engine-21082/

http://www.expeditionforum.com/f44/25c-expys-not-feeling-great-22006/

First did the brakes
Then fuel injector failed (1) dumped gas into engine. So a new short block, new tranny lines, all new injectors, all new plugs, new cat converters, etc.
Cost me about $3,000 with dealer picking up 1 plug, 1 injectors, 1 cat converter and the short block. I paid for the tranny lines, 7 plugs, 7 injectors.

Then I had to get the second cat convertor done or they wouldn't warranty the engine.

Then it still sounded rough and was feeling cold and sluggish, so I got a new thermostat

Then it died. Fuel pump module replaced

Then it started sputtering and CEL'd. New coil needed, which fried my plug and did a cylinder misfire.

So I sold it and probably got back cost of vehicle, plus $4,000 after putting in $5,000 myself.

Now I've got $10,000 and don't have a vehicle.

I want a full sized SUV that can tow.

Debating between a 2012 expy with 80,000 kms or a Tahoe/Yukon of similar cost. I say cost because the latter seem to be more expensive. What I really love on the expy's is the flush seats. Fold down and disappear. Don't like how the Yukon's and Tahoe's have the take out seats.

Anyway, am I being a knob in going with an expy again. Obviously this forum will have it's bias's. Did I just get a lemon and should be okay to try another one? I really like the look of the expy but man, what an ordeal the past 8 months have been. Borderline embarrassing.

I guess I should get out and drive a few.

Opinions would be appreciated. Thanks for reading the narrative :)

I have a 2011 EL and love it. Have only had it for a year. It had 15K on it and I've put 11K in the year I've had it. My previous was a '99.

I've known a couple friends who had a 2nd gen Expy and an F150 with the 5.4. Both had engine issues that seemed odd to me. Like what you experienced. So I did a lot of research prior to buying my '11. Including the consideration of a GM product. I have a father in law and a friend who have GMC Yukon's - one standard, one XL. When compared to the Expedition, I just can't get passed what I perceive as poor finish quality of the interior. Anyway - I found that some of the 2nd gen Expys and similar year F150s had issues with the 5.4s, including my friends. Not everyone experienced the same thing so it wasn't as prolific as it seemed to me. As far as I know, most of the kinks had been worked out by the time the 3rd Gen and I'd go so far to say especially the later 3rd Gens came around. Time will tell, but I wouldn't have it any other way. People have issues with the GM products too.

I will say this - when you buy the '12, get the Ford extended warranty with it. Haggle with the dealer and don't accept anything less than $600 off. You may be able to get more than $1000 off. Only buy the Ford, not an after market. Then, you won't have to worry about it.

Good luck in your decision. I would definitely drive an EL. It's better for towing with the longer wheelbase and the ride is incredible. Drive all of them until you are satisfied.

Wow, I don't think anyone would blame you for not getting another Expedition. I looked at Tahoes/Yukons as well, but like you mentioned they are a lot more money for a similarly equipped truck. I also got a little worried about the AFM cylinder shutdown oil burning issues with the 5.3.

I love my Expy. Then again, the truck is in the shop and my rental is a 2014 Yukon XL... I like it. But like you said, I like the flush, power-fold seats.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Just drove a 2011 Armada Platinum.

Enjoyed it - also drove a 11 Denali, enjoyed that, but it was dark out and I couldn't really enjoy all the interior and fiddle like I could in the Armada.

FWIW we bought our 08 EL last October. I've put over 20k on it and the only issue so far was a damaged seat track that was replaced under warranty.

Both ones you posted have the HD Tow Package but I would go for the 2010 Expy if it were me, the 07's 5.4 had spark plug issues.
Unless you get a 2WD fleet version you can't get limited slip diff.
My Expy handles the snow without any issues. With all the Advance Trac technology stuff I dont think you should have any concerns.
