I have a 2013 EL Limited with 165k miles that currently runs fine. I am well aware of the potential catastrophic engine failure these 5.4 3v engines are known to have at some point. I am considering replacing the timing chain, timing chain tensioners, roller followers, and other items that could go wrong in hopes to prevent the failure from occurring. However, i have also heard once you try to do the repair it cascades into worse shape and getting the new engine is inevitable.
Is it a good idea to replace the parts preemptively or just wait until the issues arise and deal with it then and expect to likely buy a new engine?
