Now that I'm running 35's, I'm trying to figure out what to do about a spare. I'm thinking the little 255/70/16 just ain't gonna cut it.

Can a guy just use this little 255's to get to the tire shop if needed, or will it bugger something up? ( I know it's not a donut spare but on our lifted rigs it will look like it) My car's spare is just a little teeny donut thing, and it's good for short drives, but I'm not sure if running different size tires for a short trip to the tire shop is O.K. on a big 4x4 like ours.

I doubt a 35 inch tire is going to fit in the space under the truck, so do you guys just throw yours back in the cargo area or what? I miss my Bronco's rear hanger.

What do you do.....

i have a full size spare up under the truck. it doesnt fit up IN the well but it does fit. the only difference is my rims are 18's but my spare is 17. but as long as the tire is the same height, you should be fine to get to shop. will take pic of how it looks under the truck when i get home and give you size i got under there.

Mine is a quality tire plugging set and a small compressor. Granted, it's not going to help if there's a catastrophic failure, but it will handle most smaller punctures. I've pretty much accepted the fact the truck is going to need to be towed if I get a major blowout. I also get bad enough mileage, I don't need to carry around an extra 100 lbs of spare tire and wheel.

If I didn't need to get in to the back so often, I'd think of adding a swing-away spare carrier. But honestly, mainly because I think it looks really cool.

One time I got a flat when I had a set of 32" tires on the truck.
I put on a 30" as a spare until I got it replaced.
I drove around for a day or two like that and it was fine...

my spare is a 295/70/17 on the stock rim and it fits under the back with no problem when my 35's get here i think the 2" difference will be ok to limp to a tire shop

Mine unfortunatley are about 5 inches shorter. Might have to upgrade. I'm running 315/75/16's now, my spare is the stock 255/70/16.

As long as you put the smaller sized wheel on a non-drive wheel you're good to go. IE if one of the back tires blow, take one from the front and put it there and put the spare on the front (providing you're not using 4WD).

As for my spare, my truck didn't have one when I got it so I found a rim at a JY and mounted a spare LT245/75R16 we had lying around, which is actually 1.38% bigger than stock but 0.45% smaller than the 265/70R16s I'll be running for the summer.

Why use a 10-ply tire as a spare? My dad used to drive an 06 Silverado 2500 while he was working as a hot shot and in 2 years he managed to put 450k km's on it... so he went through a lot of tires, hehe. When the tires got down to 25% tread he'd replace them. So, we have about 3 complete sets of tires for our plow truck; they'll rot before it ever needs them, though...

Yeah it does thanks. I'll get up under there and do some measuring. If yours fit with duals, I'm guessing I could get a skinny used 35 up there.

It probably doesn't even need to be skinnier. I'm guessing that your 3" body lift gives you extra height to tuck the spare in there without a problem.

my spare carrier, better one in works, this is my trial rack, this is NOT the finished rack
newmarch001.jpg

newmarch009.jpg

newmarch006.jpg

and this is it after changing and shortening the hold down, this worked out great for me and off roading, and my jack locks in under tire
skidplates009.jpg

new one will be tubed, and have the same latching system the seats use to lock in, and back side will pivet, so if i need the back 3 foot i can release the front levers allowing the rack to flip and face front of truck, allowing more space in hatch back area, un hook all 4 locks and remove entire unit easily, also will double as a hand tool tire break down platform, if your into changing your own tires, this will not allow the tire to flip as you try to break down the bead, and pry tire from rim, hmmmm now how smart am i? and i dont even have to fight with cable, or crawling under truck to get muddy, dirty spare out, or the cable breaking and loosing my spare, seen that to many times, infact got a few ford rims that way, hehe, thats why i drive the ugly truck, always to busy building cheap easy ways out stuff, and buying hand me downs, THANKS TO WINGNUT MART,

You know I came across a thread yesterday on Pirate4x4 where someone had this same setup in a 97 4Runner... then they chopped the top off behind the doors... say, has anyone done an Expedition chop top? :D

I'm just thinking skinnier due to $$$$. I don't need a 35/12.5 inch $350 tire as a spare. I'm hoping to find something a little cheaper. I just figure as long as the height is there.

Dgray- that is cool. I still use mine as a daily driver carting around the wife, 2 kids and a dog. I wish I could do something like that, but I couldn't fit the groceries and skates, and bikes and everything else back there with a set up like that. But damn good job.

mine is also a dd, and totes the fam around, thats why its made to go in and out, im thinking about getting another expy, this ones nearly paid off, new one will be the same as this only think im going 2 wheel drive to s.a.s 4x4 for off road only toy, then something is getting choped, wheel wells will be flaired to max, bigest dam tires i can afford to pick up cheap, id like the 2 trucks to match, may even end up going with an identical set up only on an exploder, just couse it may be easier to trail than the expy, either way what every the new project is it will be sick building it, lol sorry bikes belong on rack slid into reciever glad i got my new reciever on, im even building a platform rack for back so i can fit 3 large coolers for off road days at park

lane, if you go to a used tire shop you can find some really cheap. i found that one for 70 bucks. doesnt have tons of tread left on it but enough to get me somewhere should i have a blowout! i was gonna make a mount on the inside along the window but dont think it would be strong enough. still thinkin about those options.

actually the spare tire carrier is part of the frame so with the bodylift it will hang even lower

Do a search on here or google for "expedition himalaya"
You could only really do the conversion if you don't have rear a/c.

I know it is part of the frame, so really, it would be at the same height, but now there are three extra inches above between the frame (including the mount) and the body.
Maybe I'm wrong, though...just trying to help out.

Here is someone that made their own 'Himalaya' Expedition:
