Got some business in Texas on the 26th, scenic route Los Angeles to Houston roadtrip advice anyone?

Plan to set out sometime tomorrow, toss an airbed in the back of the Gator L and take it easy.

Routing suggestions? Places to see? Places to avoid?

Previous road trips, I've tried to avoid interstates. Prefer US highways and county roads, more interesting less bland

If you like scenic at some point you should be able to pick up Route 66

Once you get past Ft Stockton take the old highway(exit325) through Sheffield and up Sheffield hill by the old fort. At Sonora take exit 404 and follow FM864 up to Hwy 190, that will run you through the hill country(it's Bluebonnet season). Follow Hwy 190 to Menard. At Menard follow US 83 to Hwy 29 to LLano. At Llano pick up Hwy 71 thru Austin to Bastrop. At Bastrop go north on Hwy21 till you intersect Hwy 290 and follow Hwy 290 in to Houston. It will not add a lot of miles and is more scenic than IH10. You will trade going through San Antonio to going Through Austin.

I like this thread. Im getting ready to drive to Sarasota to help parental units, then out west to Grand Canyon and wherever. Was looking for ideas on route to drive through Texas! Might visit friends in Tucson.

Said slightly tongue in cheek, but you could also research where you can see the border without the wall. Or see sections of the old wall/fence.

There’s an ancient trail along the present day AZ/MX border called El Camino Del Diablo (The Devil’s Highway). This trail takes about 2 days to drive- however, you can go see parts of it without the 2 day commitment.

If you’re into airplanes, the Pima Air and Space Museum in Yuma.

Well, started out late, so just took I-10 there... gonna be heading back in couple hours though, might take something scenic for that.

PS impressed by San Antonio and Houston, so much nicer than LA!

Texas State police should really kick some trucker ass, though ---- SOO many big rigs with high powered HIDs in stock reflector housings going 80-85 on the interstate at night, blinding everyone, and way too fast to pass and lose without serious speeding violations.... literally gotta go 95 mph or take a few curves at 90 to ditch these blinding fools

Formerly named US Route 666 (hence the devil reference) but since renamed to Route 191 in AZ. Haven't been on it in since I was ten, but back then it was known for tight hairpin curves with no guardrails. Back then, it did live up to the nickname.
