It is the result of a reduced supply of oil. Oil refineries have less oil, so they are are focusing on higher-margin products. Like always, it's all about money.
I've seen posts where people have done it so it's possible, but it seems like a fairly involved project.
The 4R70 is cheaper/easier to fix, but the 6R80 is generally considered to be more robust. I have 224k on my 6R80.
This can be tough to track down. I had it happen last year and it turned out to be my front passenger door switch. At random points during the day/night, it would trigger as if the door was opening. Lights would come on, then go off. I have no idea how often this was happening, but it was...
Prior to posting, I wasn't able to find info on removing the cap - just replacing the entire mirror. When I search the exact term you used, it came up.
My RH power folding mirror has failed and I'm going to try to get from a junkyard. I have a Limited, so the back mirror cap is painted. The options are limited so I am wondering if the caps are removable (and if so, how involved it is)?
Not very detailed, but this guy gives an overview of it. Looks like a PITA (like most of these blend/mode door jobs).

221k on mine. I think the 2 biggest repairs that I've done were the intake manifold gasket and the water pump. The timing job isn't something I wish to tackle, but I would pay for it if not for the fact that the PA salt is eating her alive. I think she will rot out before the engine goes. My...
I've been expecting mine to need this work done for awhile, but at nearly 221k she's still going. The road salt has eaten up so much of the truck at this point though that I wouldn't put the money into it.
The 2-piece plugs are long gone, so removal issues are not a concern. You're not going to gain any longevity by swapping them out way before their time either. It's your nickel, but it's not a turbo and swapping them out every 30k doesn't actually accomplish anything outside of raising your cost...
Michelin Defenders are all I'll buy for my SUVs now. Great on dry/wet and I get 70k miles out of every set. Just so-so in the snow, but it doesn't snow much here anymore. The prices of them are ridiculous though. $305/ea at Sam's Club for the 20" and the rebate on a set of 4 has dropped to $70...
