I have a 2017 Expedition that I've owned for about 8k miles, currently has 118k miles on it. I was just under the vehicle to check the serpentine belt and noticed an oil/light sludge accumulation on the back side of the air dam on the driver's side. Upon further inspection I traced it to the...
UPDATE: Thank you to everyone here for the input, I ended up getting the 2017 Limited and I’m really happy with it! I had a 1100 mile trip back home with it and it rode great, very similar to the platinum and normal mode.
I had a 2017 Platinum EL and really loved the CCD suspension setup but that unfortunately got wrecked and I'm looking for another clean 2017. I haven't been able to find a really clean Platinum that has everything I need (4x4, HD tow pkg) but I did find a King Ranch with rear load-leveling and...
@2WheelWillie Thanks for all the info, I have 124k miles on it, certainly not expecting this kind of issue. I replaced all bearings including the output shaft bearings. The initial issue was a carrier bearing badly pitted/delamination, I’m wondering if the spider gears/side gears were wearing...
I just rebuilt the front differential in my 2017 Expedition because one of the bearings was going out (apparently a common problem with these where the bearings and bearing cup start to break down/delaminate). I replaced all bearings and seals, got everything dialed in to spec (see below) and...
update: I got the backlash dialed in at 0.006” and the attached pictures are my gear pattern, I think it looks pretty good but I’m looking for anyone’s thoughts on it. My only concern is the amount of preload on the carrier bearings, I’m at 4 or 5 in-lbs more than the pinion preload, if I’m...
Thanks for the tip! I found the motive gear shim kit, I'm going to set it up with that. I also found a great video that goes through the setup with explanation and specs here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE-2IVqAwOw
UPDATE: I got the oil baffle and all bearings and seals installed, but the original differential carrier shims are way tighter going in now. I am struggling to get the carrier installed with the shims, has anyone done that before and have some tips?
@BMW2FORD thank you for the link, that gave me exactly what I needed! I called the closest dealership parts dept and they found it by the part number. It’s amazing to me that this $2 part is not in any rebuild kits that I’ve found, and not sold separately anywhere other than from Ford. Here it...
I am in the process of rebuilding the frond diff on my 2017 Expedition due to the apparently very common rough growling noise, turns out it was a carrier bearing and race that had damage. Looks like bad metal or heat treat. While on the last part of the tear down I noticed I didn't have a new...
